Amazed

Chapter 9

Police surrounded the lake house before dawn.

Ethan told them about a hidden tunnel beneath the basement.

Diane had used it to move documents and people without being seen from the road.

Officer Grant entered with the tactical team.

I waited in an armored vehicle with Lily and Mark.

Thirty minutes passed.

Then an hour.

Finally, Grant called.

The tunnel was empty.

But they had found a room behind a false wall.

Inside were passports, cash, weapons, and recordings of powerful people accepting bribes.

Diane had built an insurance policy against everyone who worked for her.

They also found my father’s watch.

The back was stained with dried blood.

She had kept it like a trophy.

Lily saw my face and held my hand.

“Did they find Grandma?”

“No, baby.”

“Will she come for us?”

Before I could answer, my phone rang.

Diane.

Grant ordered me to put the call on speaker.

“You found my collection,” Diane said.

“You murdered my father.”

“Ryan damaged the car. Your father might have lived if he had known how to obey.”

Rage shook through me.

“Where are you?”

“Closer than you think.”

A gunshot echoed outside.

Officers shouted.

The driver of our armored vehicle slumped forward.

Mark pulled Lily down.

The rear door opened.

Diane stood there wearing a police jacket.

She pointed a gun at me.

“Get out.”

I moved slowly.

“Leave Lily here.”

“She comes too.”

“No.”

Diane grabbed my hair and dragged me from the vehicle.

Mark lunged at her.

She fired into the ground beside his foot.

“Try that again.”

Lily climbed out because she thought it would save us.

Diane forced us toward the woods behind the house.

A second vehicle waited beyond the trees.

Nora sat in the driver’s seat.

For one terrible second, I thought she had betrayed us.

Then I saw the bruise on her face.

Diane had forced her to drive.

“Put Lily in the car,” Diane ordered.

I blocked the door.

“You don’t need her.”

“She is the final witness.”

“She’s six years old.”

“She remembers too much.”

Nora suddenly pressed the horn.

The sound cut through the forest.

Diane turned and struck her.

I grabbed Diane’s gun arm.

We fell against the car.

The gun fired into the air.

Mark pulled Lily behind a tree.

Diane hit me with her free hand.

“You took my son from me!”

“Ryan chose this!”

“You poisoned him against his own mother.”

“You taught him to destroy everyone who said no.”

She pushed me to the ground and aimed the gun at my chest.

Then Ethan stepped from behind the trees.

“Diane.”

She froze.

He was holding his phone.

The call with federal agents was still connected.

“They heard everything,” he said.

Diane’s face twisted.

“You weak little coward.”

She pointed the gun at him.

Nora slammed the car door into Diane’s side.

The weapon flew from her hand.

I kicked it beneath the vehicle.

Diane grabbed Lily’s coat and pulled her backward.

“If I lose, Claire loses too!”

Lily bit Diane’s wrist.

Diane screamed and released her.

Mark rushed forward, lifting Lily away.

Officers poured through the trees.

Diane tried to run but slipped in the mud.

Grant caught her and forced her hands behind her back.

This time, federal agents placed the handcuffs on her.

No local attorney could quietly arrange her release.

No paid officer could lead her through a service elevator.

As they dragged her toward the road, Diane looked at Ethan.

“You think they’ll forgive you?”

Ethan remained silent.

Then she looked at me.

“He helped us hide the truth. Ask him who removed your father from the car.”

I turned toward Ethan.

His eyes filled with tears.

“It was me,” he said.

The ground seemed to disappear beneath me.

“He was alive when I found him.”

My voice broke.

“Then why didn’t you save him?”

“Ryan was standing behind me with a gun.”

“You left my father there?”

“I moved him away from the road. I tried to stop the bleeding. Ryan made me leave before the ambulance arrived.”

Diane smiled as officers pulled her away.

Even in defeat, she had found one final way to hurt us.

Ethan stepped toward me.

“I have lived with that moment every day.”

I backed away.

“You should have told me the moment you called.”

“I was afraid you’d never let me meet Lily.”

“You were right.”

Lily watched from Mark’s arms.

I knew the trials would expose everything.

Ryan’s crimes.

Diane’s empire.

Ethan’s silence.

But as the sun rose over the lake, I understood that surviving the truth was different from healing from it.

And our family still had one final battle ahead.
