Chapter 1

I heard my dead son calling from inside the wall.
At first, I thought grief had finally broken me.
“Please save me,” the voice whispered. “I can’t breathe.”
My knees nearly gave out.
Three years earlier, Victoria had placed a tiny coffin in front of me and told me my son, Oliver, was gone.
A fever, she said.
A seizure.
A tragedy no father could fight.
I buried an empty ache that day and stopped searching because my wife held my hand and told me there was nothing left to find.
Then Hannah arrived at my mansion with a sledgehammer.
She was my late brother’s daughter.
Quiet.
Stubborn.
The only person in my family who never fully believed Victoria.
She ran into the east hallway, pale and shaking.
“Arthur, he’s in there.”
Victoria came after her.
“Get away from that wall.”
Hannah raised the hammer.
“Move.”
Victoria screamed, “He was never supposed to be found!”
The words froze the room.
I turned to my wife.
“What did you say?”
Her face lost all color.
Behind the wall, the small voice came again.
“Father?”
I took the sledgehammer from Hannah.
Every strike split more than plaster.
It split three years of lies.
When the wall collapsed, I saw him.
Oliver.
Thin.
Filthy.
Alive.
My son reached for me with trembling hands.
I pulled him out and held him while he gasped against my chest.
“I’m here,” I sobbed. “I’m here.”
He clutched my shirt.
“She lied about everything, Father.”
Hannah found a small recorder hidden in the chamber.
Oliver had protected it with his body.
When I pressed play, Victoria’s voice filled the hallway.
Cold.
Careful.
Planning my son’s death without killing him.
Then the final recording began.
Another voice spoke.
A voice I trusted more than anyone.
My father.

And in that moment, I understood Victoria had not hidden my son only to punish me.
She had hidden him because Oliver knew a secret powerful enough to destroy the entire family.
