Amazed

Chapter 4

The mansion search began that afternoon.

Detective Reeves returned with warrants, crime scene technicians, and a patience my father hated.

Edmund shouted about reputation.

Victoria demanded lawyers.

I stood in the foyer holding Oliver’s stuffed bear, the one they had buried in his coffin three years ago.

Except the bear in the coffin had been new.

This one had been hidden in the chamber with him.

Another lie.

Hannah walked beside me as officers opened Edmund’s study.

The room smelled like leather, cigars, and old power.

Behind a bookcase, they found a safe.

Edmund refused the code.

Oliver gave it.

“Mother’s birthday,” he whispered.

I stared at him.

“My mother?”

He nodded.

“Grandfather said it when he was drunk.”

The safe opened.

Inside were files.

Birth certificates.

Death certificates.

Adoption records.

Property transfers.

Medical reports.

Names I knew.

Names I did not.

Hannah grabbed one folder.

Her name was on it.

Inside was her birth record.

Mother: Elise Vale.

Father: unknown.

Not my brother.

Not Edmund’s official story.

Hannah staggered.

I caught her.

Detective Reeves opened another folder.

Oliver Vale.

Legal status: deceased.

Asset transfer pending.

My signature appeared on the bottom.

Forged.

Then came another file.

My wife Victoria had signed a guardianship agreement giving control of Oliver’s inheritance to Edmund after my “mental collapse.”

My collapse.

They had planned mine too.

Hannah whispered, “Arthur.”

She held up a photograph.

A young woman stood beside Edmund.

Pregnant.

On the back, in my brother’s handwriting:

If Elise disappears, Father knows why.

Hannah began sobbing.

I held her with one arm and Oliver’s bear with the other.

My family was not a dynasty.

It was a graveyard with paperwork.
