Amazed

Chapter 18

The Vale Truth Center opened one year after Oliver was found.

No ribbon.

Oliver hated scissors near ceremonies.

So we opened the front doors together.

That was enough.

Families came from across the country.

Some seeking records.

Some seeking children.

Some seeking proof they had not imagined the wrongness in their own homes.

Hannah gave the first speech.

Short.

Powerful.

“My mother was hidden because she knew too much. My cousin was hidden because he inherited too much. We are opening this house because no family should be powerful enough to erase truth.”

Elise spoke next.

“I lost years,” she said. “But I did not lose my daughter forever.”

Then Oliver surprised us.

He stepped forward.

My heart stopped.

He looked at the small crowd.

“I was scared in the wall,” he said.

Silence fell.

“I thought nobody heard me. But Hannah did.”

Hannah covered her mouth.

Oliver continued.

“If you hear something wrong, don’t let people tell you it’s pipes.”

A ripple of tears and laughter moved through the room.

He stepped back into my arms.

“Was that okay?” he whispered.

“It was perfect.”

Later, a little boy touched the mark wall and asked Oliver, “Did you make all these?”

Oliver nodded.

“Every day.”

“Why?”

“So I knew I was still here.”

The boy looked at him.

“You are.”

May you like

Oliver smiled.

“Yes. I am.”
