Amazed

Chapter 10

I gave the drive to Detective Voss.

Then to federal agents.

Then to no one else.

I had spent my life believing control meant holding evidence close.

Now I understood control had buried my wife.

Truth needed witnesses.

Dante moved quickly.

By noon, three of my warehouses were raided.

Anonymous tips.

Weapons planted.

My name on documents I had never signed.

He was trying to turn the law against me before I could turn it against him.

Luca spread the papers across the safe house table.

“He wants you arrested.”

“Good.”

Everyone looked at me.

“If I’m arrested, he thinks Leo loses protection. We make sure he is wrong.”

I signed temporary guardianship to Alessia and legal protection through the court.

Everything clean.

Everything witnessed.

Then I called Detective Voss.

“I will come in voluntarily.”

Luca objected.

Alessia objected.

Leo woke up and asked if I was leaving.

That stopped every argument.

I knelt beside him.

“I have to talk to people.”

“Bad people?”

“Some good. Some confused.”

“Will you come back?”

“Yes.”

He held up his bear.

“Promise him.”

I put my hand on the bear’s head.

“I promise.”

At the federal building, agents questioned me for nine hours.

They showed me warehouse photos.

Documents.

Signatures.

I told the truth.

Some of my businesses were dirty.

Some under my knowledge.

Some under Dante’s.

I did not pretend innocence where I had none.

That shocked them more than denial would have.

Detective Voss entered near midnight.

“We picked up one of Dante’s men.”

“And?”

“He says Dante ordered Helena to weaken Leo emotionally before filing a custody challenge.”

My jaw tightened.

“Custody?”

“Helena was supposed to claim you were unstable, grieving, and unfit. Dante would support her petition. Once Leo was in her care…”

“She could control the trust.”

Voss nodded.

“And if Leo died?”

She did not answer.

She didn’t have to.

When I returned to the safe house at dawn, Leo was asleep on the couch waiting for me.

The bear was in his lap.

Alessia whispered, “He said promises need witnesses.”

May you like

I sat beside my son until sunrise.

Because he was right.
