Amazed

Chapter 17

The first time Leo laughed in the garage, I nearly fell apart.

He was five.

Rosa had spilled soap bubbles while washing donation bins.

Leo stepped into them and slid two inches.

Not enough to fall.

Enough to giggle.

A real giggle.

Bright.

Unforced.

The garage did not answer with fear.

It answered with bubbles.

I leaned against the wall.

Alessia found me there.

“You look like someone punched you.”

“Worse. He laughed.”

She smiled.

“Terrible news.”

I watched Leo chase bubbles with Rosa.

“I almost lost him.”

“But you didn’t.”

“Sofia did.”

Alessia’s smile faded.

“Yes.”

We stood together with that truth.

No fixing it.

No softening it.

Then she said, “I’m going to tell my daughters everything.”

I looked at her.

“All of it?”

“All of it. Secrets made this family sick.”

She was right.

That summer, the Bellucci trust was restructured again under court supervision.

Leo’s inheritance became untouchable by relatives.

Education.

Health.

Future.

Protected.

Independent trustees.

No blood loopholes.

No cousin clauses.

No hidden knives.

I signed every document with relief.

Luca said, “You know this limits your control too.”

“Good.”

He smiled.

“You’ve changed.”

“I have a child.”

“You had one before.”

“No. Before, I had a child inside a house built for dangerous men. Now I am trying to build a world where he can be a child.”

Luca nodded.

“That is harder.”

“Yes.”

On Leo’s sixth birthday, we hosted a party in the garden.

No luxury cars.

No business guests.

Just children, cake, balloons, and a magician who was terrible but kind.

Leo loved him.

At the end, Frank Marino the doctor gave Leo a toy stethoscope.

Leo pressed it to my chest.

“Papa heart loud.”

“It works hard.”

“For me?”

“Yes.”

He nodded seriously.

“Mine too.”

I kissed his curls.

For the first time, when I thought of Sofia, I felt grief and gratitude standing side by side.

She had protected him before I knew he needed protecting.

Now it was my turn.
