Amazed

Chapter 9

Alessia sat at the kitchen table until dawn.

She stared at her hands like they belonged to someone who had failed too many times.

“Matteo didn’t die in a boating accident,” she said finally.

I stood across from her, too tired to be gentle.

“What happened?”

“He came to me three days before he disappeared. He said Sofia used his genetic material at a clinic because your treatments after the shooting had made conception impossible.”

I closed my eyes.

I remembered the shooting.

The infection.

The doctor’s quiet warning.

A child might be difficult.

Maybe impossible.

I had never told anyone but Sofia.

She had cried with me.

Then smiled and said, “Family is more stubborn than biology.”

Alessia continued.

“Matteo said Dante found out. Dante offered him money to sign a statement saying he was Leo’s true father through an affair.”

My fists tightened.

“Sofia would have been destroyed.”

“And Leo disinherited if the court believed fraud.”

“What did Matteo do?”

“He refused. He came to warn us.”

“And you?”

“I told him to hide.”

Her voice broke.

“I arranged a boat to get him out of New York.”

I understood before she said the rest.

“The boat exploded?”

She nodded.

“I thought it was my fault.”

“It was Dante’s.”

“I kept quiet because if Dante knew I helped Matteo, he would come for my children.”

I looked at her.

Alessia had two daughters in college.

Dante knew every weakness.

That was how men like him ruled.

Not with strength.

With maps of other people’s fear.

“Do you have proof?”

She wiped her face.

“Matteo gave me a drive. I never opened it.”

“Where?”

“In my daughter’s old music box.”

She retrieved it from a storage bin under the safe house stairs.

Inside was a tiny drive wrapped in tissue.

Luca plugged it into an offline laptop.

Files appeared.

Audio.

Bank transfers.

Clinic records.

A video of Matteo speaking directly into the camera.

“If I’m dead, Dante Bellucci did it.”

In the video, Matteo described the plan to fake an affair, challenge Leo’s legitimacy, and seize the trust.

Then he said, “Sofia knows. She is gathering evidence.”

His voice shook.

“If she dies, protect the child.”

The video ended.

I looked toward the bedroom where Leo slept.

A child everyone called not real had been protected by the dead more fiercely than by the living.

That ended now.
