Chapter 1

The hockey stick cracked against my shoulder before I could even scream.
I crumpled to the cold kitchen tile, every muscle in my body screaming as I wrapped myself completely around Lily. Her tiny body shook against mine, her sobs muffled by my uniform.
"Please," I gasped, fighting to draw air into my crushed lungs. "Don't hurt my child."
Victoria stood over us, her white designer dress spotless and crisp, a stark contrast to the violence in her eyes. Her knuckles were white as bone around the wooden stick. A cruel smile tugged at her lips.
"Dead people keep secrets," she whispered, her voice soft as silk.
She raised the stick high above her head.
I closed my eyes and pressed Lily tighter, preparing to take the full force of the blow for her. This was it. This was how it ended.
But the blow never came.
The front door clicked open.
Nathan stepped into the kitchen and froze.
My heart hammered against my ribs as I looked up at him through blurry eyes. The man I had loved five years ago. The man who had no idea he was a father. The man who was about to marry the monster standing over us.
Victoria's face drained of color so fast I thought she might faint. The hockey stick slipped from her fingers, clattering loudly against the tile.
"Nathan..." she stammered, her voice trembling. "I—this isn't what it looks like."
Lily slowly lifted her tear-streaked face from my chest. Her large, innocent eyes locked directly onto Nathan's.
"Daddy..."
The word hung in the air like a gunshot.
Nathan stood paralyzed, his face draining of all color. His eyes widened until they looked like they might pop out of his head. He took one stumbling step backward, as if the single word had physically struck him.
I raised my head, gritting my teeth against the searing pain in my shoulder.
"She's your daughter, Nathan."
In that single second, I watched his perfect world shatter into a million pieces.
The woman he was supposed to marry in two weeks had just tried to beat us both to death. The secret I had carried for five years was finally out.
But the truth was far darker than my years of silence.
Five years earlier, someone powerful had forced me to vanish without a trace. Nathan's own father had threatened to ruin my life, strip away my custody, and make sure Nathan never learned the truth. And he hadn't acted alone.
Nathan was about to discover that his entire life—his engagement, his multi-million-dollar inheritance, his company—was built on a cold, calculated pact between two powerful families.
I had hidden Lily out of sheer terror. I had taken this maid job just to be close to Nathan, to let her see her father from a distance, never dreaming Victoria would discover the truth and try to eliminate us.
Victoria wanted Lily gone because my daughter was the ultimate threat to the empire she expected to control. A legitimate heir would unravel everything.
Now Nathan faced an impossible choice: protect his family's legacy, or fight for the daughter whose childhood had been stolen from him.
Within hours, fabricated police evidence surfaced, framing me as an unstable kidnapper trying to flee the country with Lily. Nathan realized his wealth wouldn't save us. He would have to publicly burn down his own family's empire to protect us.

Then his attorney slipped him a sealed envelope from his late father's safe, whispering four words that changed everything.
"The truth is in here."
