Amazed

Chapter 2

The police arrived like a storm.

Victoria had composed herself by then, her tears flowing on cue as she pointed at me, trembling.

"She attacked me first," she sobbed into an officer's shoulder. "I was defending myself. And that child—she kidnapped her. I've been worried sick."

I stared at her in disbelief. The woman who had raised a hockey stick to bash in a four-year-old's head was now playing the victim.

And they believed her.

Nathan stood frozen in the middle of the kitchen, his eyes darting between Victoria, the police, and me. I could see the war raging inside him. Everything he thought he knew was crumbling.

"Grace didn't kidnap anyone," he said finally, his voice rough.

Victoria's head snapped toward him. Her eyes blazed with a warning I knew all too well.

"Nathan, you're in shock," she said softly, moving to touch his arm. "This woman has manipulated you. She's clearly unstable."

One officer stepped toward me, his hand resting on his belt. "Ma'am, I need you to come with us."

Lily tightened her grip around my neck, her small body trembling. "No! Don't take my mommy!"

My heart shattered.

Nathan moved before I could speak. He stepped between the officer and me, his posture rigid with authority I had almost forgotten he possessed.

"Nobody is taking her anywhere until we get to the bottom of this," he said, his voice low and dangerous. "Call my attorney. Now."

The officer hesitated, then nodded into his radio.

Victoria's smile was thin and cold when Nathan wasn't looking. She had already played her next move, I realized. The fabricated evidence. The police report. Everything was already in motion.

Thirty minutes later, Nathan's attorney arrived—a sharp woman named Elena who looked like she didn't suffer fools. She pulled Nathan aside, and I watched their intense conversation from across the room.

Victoria sat on a kitchen chair, dabbing at her eyes with a silk handkerchief, but her gaze never left me. When the officers weren't looking, she mouthed two words:

"You lose."

I held Lily tighter, pressing my face into her hair. She smelled like strawberries and fear.

Elena approached me, her expression unreadable. "Grace, I need to speak with you privately."

In the dining room, away from everyone else, she got straight to the point.

"The police have a warrant for your arrest. Kidnapping charges. Victoria provided evidence—text messages, a fake passport application in your name with Lily's photo. It looks convincing."

My blood ran cold. "I didn't do any of that."

"I believe you," she said quietly. "But the evidence is stacked against you. And Victoria's family has connections in this city. Deep connections."

She glanced toward the kitchen where Nathan stood, his shoulders tense.

"He asked me to represent you. Pro bono. But I need you to be honest with me. Is Lily really his daughter?"

"Yes." My voice cracked. "I was pregnant when his father forced me to leave. He threatened to take her from me if I ever told Nathan. Said he'd make sure I never saw her again."

Elena's jaw tightened. "Richard Cole was a powerful man. And his allies are still in place."

She handed me a tissue. "Here's what's going to happen. The police will take you into custody. I'll file for an emergency bail hearing. Nathan will take temporary custody of Lily."

My heart seized. "No. I can't leave her."

"You have to," she said gently but firmly. "If you fight this now, they'll take her and put her in the system. With Nathan, she's safe. And you know it."

She was right. I did know it.

When I walked back into the kitchen, Lily saw the look on my face and started crying harder. Nathan knelt down in front of her, his movements awkward but gentle.

"Hey, sweetheart," he said softly. "I'm going to take care of you for a little while, okay? Your mommy just needs to fix some things."

Lily looked at him, then at me. "Daddy?"

Nathan's eyes glistened. "Yeah, baby. I'm here."

The officers led me away. As I looked back over my shoulder, I saw Nathan holding Lily, her face buried in his shoulder, his eyes locked on mine with a promise I prayed he could keep.

I didn't know then that he had already received the sealed envelope from his father's safe.

I didn't know that everything was about to burn.
