Chapter 3

The holding cell was cold and smelled like desperation.
I sat on the hard bench, my arms wrapped around myself, replaying every moment of that terrible day. The hockey stick. Victoria's smile. Lily's voice calling Nathan "Daddy."
Five years. I had carried this secret for five years.
Flashbacks hit me like waves.
I was twenty-one, working as an intern at Cole Industries. Nathan was twenty-six, brilliant and kind, nothing like the ruthless heir everyone described. We fell in love quickly, secretly, because his father would have never approved of a girl like me.
When I found out I was pregnant, I was terrified but hopeful. I thought Nathan would be happy. I thought we could build a life together.
But Richard Cole found out first.
He summoned me to his office, his face like stone.
"You're going to leave," he said, sliding an envelope across the desk. "And you're never going to tell my son about this child."
"I love him," I whispered. "He has a right to know."
Richard's laugh was cold. "Love doesn't pay the bills, Grace. And it doesn't build empires. Nathan is engaged to Victoria Sterling. Their union will secure both our families' futures for generations. You are nothing but a complication."
He leaned forward, his eyes dark with menace.
"If you tell him, I will destroy you. I will make sure you're charged with theft, with embezzlement, with whatever I have to invent. You'll go to prison. And when you get out, you'll never see that child again. I'll make sure of it."
He slid a one-way ticket across the desk. "You leave tomorrow. And if you ever come back, or if anyone ever finds out about this, I will make your life a living hell."
I left that night, broken and alone.
I moved to a small town three states away, gave birth to Lily alone in a hospital room, and built a new life from nothing. I worked two jobs, saved every penny, and watched my daughter grow into the most amazing little girl I could have ever imagined.
But she always asked about her father.
"Where's Daddy?" she would ask, drawing pictures of families with stick figures. "Why doesn't he love us?"
I never had the heart to tell her the truth.
When Richard Cole died six months ago, something in me shifted. The threat was gone, but the fear remained. Still, I needed Lily to know her father. Even if he never knew she existed.
So I applied for the maid position at the Cole estate. I used my middle name, dyed my hair a different color, and prayed Nathan wouldn't recognize me.
For three months, it worked. I cleaned his house, watched him from a distance, and let Lily see her father through the windows of the car when I dropped her off at daycare nearby.
But Victoria noticed.
She was sharper than I gave her credit for. She saw the way I looked at Nathan. She started asking questions, digging into my past. And three days ago, she found out the truth.
That morning, she had sent Nathan away on an emergency business trip that was completely fabricated. She waited until we were alone in the house.
"I know who you are," she said, her voice calm and terrifying. "And I know about the little bastard you're hiding."
That's when she grabbed the hockey stick.
A guard banged on my cell door, pulling me from my memories.
"Cole. Your attorney's here."
Elena sat across from me through the glass, her expression grim.
"Bail was denied," she said without preamble. "The judge bought the kidnapping story. Victoria's family made sure of it."
My stomach dropped. "How long?"
"Until the trial. Which could be months."
I felt the tears come, hot and fast. "Lily..."
"She's with Nathan. He's been... remarkable, actually. He hired a nanny, but he's been doing most of the care himself. Took her to the park yesterday. Bought her a room full of toys. Kept asking me how to braid hair."
A small, sad smile touched my lips. That sounded like Nathan.
Elena leaned forward. "But there's something else. Nathan opened the envelope from his father's safe."
My breath caught. "What was in it?"
"The truth," she said quietly. "Richard Cole's confession. Handwritten. He admitted to threatening you, to paying people to cover up your pregnancy, to orchestrating Nathan's engagement to Victoria as part of a business merger."
My hands started shaking. "He wrote it all down?"
"Everything. Including the fact that Victoria's father was fully complicit. They planned it together. The engagement, the merger, your disappearance—all of it was a business deal."
She paused, her eyes intense.
"Nathan is furious. He's planning to go public. He's going to hold a press conference tomorrow morning, expose everything, and call off the engagement."
My heart raced. "But his company—his legacy—"
May you like
"He says some things are more important than money," Elena said. "He told me to tell you he's going to fix this. He's going to get you out of here, and he's going to make sure Victoria and everyone else who hurt you pays."
For the first time in five years, I allowed myself to hope.
