Amazed

Chapter 1

Vanessa tore Mia’s princess dress in front of the entire school.

The sound of ripping fabric cut through the auditorium.

“You’ll never belong in our family,” she hissed.

Mia stood frozen beneath the stage lights.

She was only six.

Her silver costume hung open at the side, and tears rolled down her cheeks as hundreds of parents watched.

I jumped out of my seat and ran toward the stage.

“Get away from her!”

Vanessa turned with a smile.

“It was only a costume, Claire.”

I pulled Mia behind me.

Her little hands clutched the back of my dress.

Vanessa wore a dark blue designer gown that probably cost more than my car payment.

She glanced at the audience as if she expected everyone to take her side.

I grabbed the long train of her gown.

Then I ripped it straight down the middle.

Vanessa screamed.

“So is yours,” I said.

The auditorium went silent.

Even the children backstage stopped moving.

Vanessa lunged toward me, but her hand reached past my shoulder.

She was reaching for Mia again.

I slapped her hand away.

“Don’t touch my daughter.”

“You crazy little—”

Two security guards rushed onto the stage.

Principal Harris followed them.

“Mrs. Whitmore, you need to leave immediately.”

Vanessa pointed at me.

“She attacked me!”

“At least twenty people recorded what happened,” Principal Harris said. “Leave now.”

Parents were holding up their phones.

Some looked shocked.

Others looked furious.

Vanessa tried to cover the tear in her gown while security led her down the steps.

“This isn’t over!” she shouted.

I took off my coat and wrapped it around Mia’s shoulders.

She was trembling.

“Mommy, I can’t perform now.”

I knelt in front of her.

“Yes, you can.”

“My dress is ruined.”

“You are not the dress.”

I wiped her tears away.

“You practiced for three months. Vanessa doesn’t get to steal this from you.”

Principal Harris touched my shoulder.

“We can postpone the show.”

“No,” I said.

Then I looked toward Vanessa as security pushed open the auditorium doors.

“She leaves. Mia finishes her performance.”

Applause started somewhere near the back.

Then more parents joined in.

Soon the entire room was clapping for my daughter.

Mia looked around in disbelief.

Her teacher hurried backstage and returned with safety pins and a gold sash.

Together, we repaired the torn costume as well as we could.

The rip remained visible.

I wanted it visible.

I wanted everyone to see what Mia had overcome.

When the music began again, she stepped into the spotlight.

Her voice shook during the first line.

Then she looked at me.

I smiled.

Mia lifted her chin and continued.

By the end of the song, she sounded stronger than she ever had during practice.

The audience rose to its feet.

But Mia didn’t smile until she ran into my arms backstage.

“Was I good?”

“You were brave.”

Principal Harris entered with a police officer.

My stomach tightened.

“Mrs. Bennett, we need to speak privately.”

Mia held me tighter.

The officer noticed.

“You aren’t in trouble,” he said gently. “We need your statement about what Mrs. Whitmore did.”

Vanessa was my husband’s older sister.

She had hated me from the day Daniel introduced us.

But her cruelty toward Mia had always come disguised as jokes.

She called Mia “Claire’s baggage.”

She gave every grandchild a Christmas gift except her.

She displayed family photographs that somehow never included us.

Daniel always confronted her.

Vanessa always apologized.

Then she found a quieter way to hurt us.

Tonight, she had stopped hiding.

I told the officer everything.

When I finished, Mia whispered, “She cut it before.”

I looked down.

“What?”

“Aunt Vanessa cut my dress before she pulled it.”

Principal Harris closed the dressing-room door.

“Mia, can you tell us exactly what happened?”

Mia stared at the floor.

“She came backstage and said she wanted to fix my bow. Then she used little scissors near the side.”

“Did anyone else see her?”

“Olivia did.”

Olivia was Vanessa’s seven-year-old daughter.

She had wanted the princess role.

When the teacher chose Mia, Vanessa complained that the audition had been unfair.

The officer wrote something down.

“Where is Olivia now?”

“With her father,” Principal Harris said. “They left after the incident.”

My phone rang.

Daniel.

I answered immediately.

“Where are you?” I asked.

“At home.”

His voice sounded strange.

“Vanessa is here.”

My blood turned cold.

“She went to our house?”

“She says you attacked her in front of hundreds of people.”

“She tore Mia’s costume while Mia was wearing it.”

“I saw the videos.”

I waited for the question I had feared.

What did you do?

Instead, Daniel said, “I told her to get out.”

Relief hit me so hard that my knees weakened.

“She won’t leave,” he continued. “Mom is here too.”

Eleanor.

My mother-in-law had defended Vanessa through every scandal.

“I’m bringing Mia home,” I said.

“Wait.”

Daniel lowered his voice.

“Vanessa says she has something that will destroy our family.”

“She always says that.”

“This time she brought documents.”

“What documents?”

“She won’t show me until you’re here.”

I looked at Mia.

She was staring at me with frightened eyes.

Then she tugged my sleeve.

“Mommy?”

“What is it?”

“Aunt Vanessa told me something before the show.”

I crouched beside her.

“What did she say?”

Mia swallowed.

“She said Daddy Daniel won’t want me after he gets a real daughter.”

The hallway seemed to disappear around me.

Daniel and I had not told anyone.

Not Vanessa.

Not Eleanor.

Not even Mia.

The adoption petition had been filed three weeks earlier.

Daniel wanted to become Mia’s legal father.

And somewhere, somehow, Vanessa had found out.
