Amazed

Chapter 4

Vanessa smiled before she remembered to hide it.

That smile told me everything.

“You deleted the recording,” I said.

Her attorney raised a hand.

“My client will not respond to accusations.”

Principal Harris was still on the speakerphone.

“The system shows someone used an administrator’s password at six fourteen this morning.”

“Who has that password?” Daniel asked.

“Three employees.”

“Was anyone inside the building?”

“The alarm records show the side entrance was opened with a volunteer badge.”

Vanessa had chaired the school fundraiser.

She had a volunteer badge.

Her attorney closed his folder.

“This meeting is over.”

Grant stood in front of the door.

“Where were you at six fourteen?”

“At a hotel.”

“Which one?”

Vanessa glared at him.

“You don’t get to interrogate me.”

“I’m asking whether you broke into a school.”

“I helped pay for that school.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

Her attorney warned Grant to move.

He did, but his face had changed.

He no longer looked confused.

He looked afraid of his wife.

Vanessa paused beside me.

“You could have avoided this.”

“All I had to do was let you abuse my child?”

“All you had to do was remember your place.”

Daniel stepped between us.

“Go.”

She left with her attorney.

Principal Harris asked us to come to the school.

Police officers were already there when we arrived.

The backstage computer had been wiped.

The security company said recovery might be impossible.

But Vanessa had made one mistake.

The system stored door-access records on a separate server.

Her badge had opened the side entrance.

“That proves the badge was used,” the officer warned. “It doesn’t prove she used it.”

Vanessa would say it had been stolen.

She would lie until every fact became a question.

While officers searched backstage, I walked to the costume room.

Mia’s teacher, Ms. Lopez, sat beside a rack of dresses.

She had been crying.

“I’m sorry,” she said.

“You didn’t tear the dress.”

“I should have protected her.”

“Did you see Vanessa with scissors?”

“No. But Nora may have.”

“Nora?”

“Nora Bell. She volunteered in costumes.”

The name was on the pageant program.

I asked where she was.

Ms. Lopez looked nervous.

“She quit this morning.”

“Why?”

“She sent me a message saying she wanted no involvement.”

Daniel called the number listed in the volunteer directory.

It had been disconnected.

Principal Harris checked Nora’s emergency contact information.

Her address was an apartment fifteen minutes away.

The police said they could not chase a witness who had not reported a crime.

So Daniel and I went ourselves.

Nora’s apartment door stood open.

Boxes filled the living room.

A young woman hurried between them.

When she saw us, she tried to shut the door.

“Please,” I said. “This is about Mia.”

Her expression softened for half a second.

Then fear returned.

“I didn’t see anything.”

“You left before we asked.”

“I’m moving.”

“Vanessa paid you,” Daniel said.

Nora’s eyes filled with tears.

“No.”

“She paid Julia Mercer twenty thousand dollars,” he continued. “We have bank records. If she paid you too, investigators will find it.”

“She didn’t pay me.”

“Then why are you running?”

Nora glanced toward the parking lot.

“She threatened my job.”

Nora worked for a catering company owned by Vanessa’s closest friend.

After the pageant, Vanessa cornered her near the loading entrance.

“She said if I talked, I would never work at another event in this city.”

“What did you see?” I asked.

Nora stepped into the hallway and closed the apartment door behind her.

“I saw Vanessa cut the seam. Olivia saw it too.”

“Did Mia?”

“Not at first.”

Nora had confronted Vanessa quietly.

Vanessa claimed the dress was too tight and needed an adjustment.

Then she leaned close to Mia and whispered something.

“What did she say?” I asked.

Nora’s voice broke.

“She said, ‘When this dress falls apart, everyone will finally see what you are.’”

Rage rose inside me.

Daniel took my hand before I could speak.

“Will you tell the police?”

“I can’t.”

“She threatened a child.”

“I have two children. I need my job.”

“We can protect you.”

“No one can protect me from people like her.”

Nora returned inside.

The door clicked shut.

I stood there feeling helpless.

Then it opened again.

Nora held out her phone.

“I started recording after I saw the scissors.”

The audio was faint, but Vanessa’s voice was clear.

When this dress falls apart, everyone will finally see what you are.

Mia asked, What am I?

Vanessa answered, A temporary mistake.

Then another voice entered the recording.

Olivia.

Mommy, stop.

Vanessa snapped at her daughter to be quiet.

Nora sent us the file.

“I won’t make a statement,” she said. “Not yet.”

“You just gave us more than a statement,” Daniel replied.

We took the recording to the police.

By that afternoon, the complete story began spreading online.

Parents combined their individual videos.

One clip showed Vanessa approaching Mia backstage.

Another showed the scissors in her hand.

A third captured the moment she tore the weakened seam.

The edited lie was collapsing.

But the damage to our adoption case remained.

Our attorney called just before dinner.

“The review officer wants to interview Mia.”

“Absolutely not.”

“Claire, refusing could make things worse.”

“She has already been questioned by police and school officials.”

“I know.”

“She thinks this is her fault.”

“The interview can happen at home with a child specialist.”

Daniel put the call on speaker.

“When?”

“Tomorrow morning.”

Mia entered the kitchen holding the torn costume.

She had heard enough.

“Are they deciding if Daddy can keep me?”

Daniel knelt.

“No one is taking me away from you.”

“But Aunt Vanessa said they might.”

I sat beside them.

“This is not your fault.”

Mia’s lower lip trembled.

Then she reached into the pocket of the costume.

“I forgot I had this.”

She handed me a small black object.

It was a voice recorder used by the drama teacher so children could practice their lines.

Ms. Lopez had placed one in every lead performer’s costume.

My fingers shook as Daniel pressed play.

We heard backstage noise.

Then Vanessa’s voice.

She did not merely insult Mia.

May you like

She described her entire plan.

“I’ll make your mother show everyone how violent she really is.”
