Amazed

Chapter 5

The recording lasted seven minutes.

Every word made Vanessa’s intentions clearer.

She told Mia that Daniel would abandon us.

She said the adoption would never happen.

She said no one would believe a frightened child over a respected member of the Whitmore family.

Then she instructed Olivia to stand near the curtain and stay silent.

Olivia began crying.

Vanessa called her weak.

Mia’s voice sounded tiny.

“Please don’t be mean to Olivia.”

Even while Vanessa terrorized her, Mia had tried to protect her cousin.

Then came the sound of ripping fabric.

The recording ended beneath the applause after Mia’s performance.

Our attorney listened twice.

“This changes everything.”

The police agreed.

Vanessa was arrested that evening for witness intimidation, evidence tampering, unauthorized access to the school, and crimes connected to the stolen court documents.

She posted bail within hours.

By morning, television vans waited outside our house.

Daniel closed every curtain.

Mia’s interview took place in the living room.

The child specialist brought crayons and spoke gently.

I wanted to remain beside Mia, but the specialist explained that she needed to answer independently.

Daniel and I waited in the kitchen.

Every minute felt like an hour.

When the specialist finally emerged, she looked serious.

“Mia was honest and consistent.”

“Did Vanessa tell her anything else?” I asked.

“Yes.”

My heart sank.

Vanessa had been secretly approaching Mia for weeks.

At school pickup.

During family dinners.

Once inside the bathroom at Eleanor’s birthday party.

She told Mia that Daniel only pretended to love her.

She warned that if Mia mentioned the conversations, Daniel would leave sooner.

Daniel gripped the edge of the counter.

“I was in that house.”

“So was I,” I whispered.

The specialist heard me.

“Children often hide threats because they believe silence protects their parents.”

Mia walked into the kitchen clutching a purple crayon.

Daniel fell to his knees and hugged her.

“You never have to protect me from the truth.”

“I didn’t want you to leave.”

“I’m not leaving.”

“Even if I tell bad things?”

“Especially then.”

The specialist recommended counseling and no contact with Vanessa.

Our adoption review remained open, but the allegations against us appeared unfounded.

For the first time in days, I breathed normally.

Then Grant called.

“Olivia told me what happened.”

His voice was broken.

“She thinks her mother’s arrest is her fault.”

“It isn’t.”

“I know. But Vanessa made her lie.”

He asked whether Olivia could speak with Mia.

I looked at my daughter.

She nodded immediately.

Grant brought Olivia over that afternoon.

The girls stared at each other across the living room.

Olivia began crying.

“I’m sorry I let Mommy rip your dress.”

Mia crossed the room.

“You told her to stop.”

“I should’ve screamed.”

“You were scared.”

“So were you.”

Mia hugged her.

Two children understood in seconds what the adults had spent years refusing to see.

Grant watched them, tears running down his face.

Then he handed Daniel a flash drive.

“I searched Vanessa’s office.”

It contained financial records, emails, and recordings.

Vanessa documented everything because she trusted no one.

One email showed that she had pressured a school board member to challenge Mia’s casting.

Another proved she offered Nora’s employer a contract in exchange for firing her.

The most disturbing file was a list of judges, clerks, teachers, and reporters Vanessa believed could be influenced.

Eleanor’s name appeared at the top.

“What does the number beside Mom’s name mean?” Daniel asked.

Grant swallowed.

“Money.”

Vanessa had transferred more than four hundred thousand dollars into an account connected to Eleanor.

Daniel called her immediately.

She arrived thirty minutes later.

When we showed her the record, she did not look surprised.

“It was repayment,” she said.

“For what?” Daniel demanded.

“A private loan.”

“When?”

“Seven years ago.”

“Why hide it through shell accounts?”

Eleanor sat down.

“Because the money wasn’t originally mine.”

She explained that Vanessa had secretly used foundation funds to purchase a failing property.

When Eleanor discovered it, she covered the loss to prevent a scandal.

Vanessa promised to repay her.

“You concealed fraud,” I said.

“I protected the foundation.”

“You protected Vanessa.”

Eleanor closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

Daniel paced the room.

“How many times?”

Eleanor did not answer.

“How many times did you save her?”

“More than I can count.”

Grant looked sick.

“So she learned there were never consequences.”

Eleanor stared at the girls.

“I thought love meant protecting my child.”

“No,” Daniel said. “You protected her from becoming better.”

A car door slammed outside.

We all looked toward the window.

Vanessa stood at the end of the driveway.

She was legally prohibited from contacting Mia.

Yet she walked straight toward our house.

Grant rushed outside.

Vanessa held a large envelope.

“You took Olivia from me,” she shouted.

“She is staying with me,” Grant said.

“She is my daughter.”

“She is terrified of you.”

Vanessa saw Eleanor through the window.

“Tell them!”

Eleanor stepped onto the porch.

“No.”

Vanessa’s face twisted.

“No?”

“I will not rescue you again.”

For one moment, she looked like a frightened child.

Then the rage returned.

She threw the envelope at my feet.

Dozens of photographs scattered across the porch.

They showed me meeting a man at a coffee shop.

Hugging him.

Getting into his car.

Daniel picked one up.

The man was my late husband’s younger brother, Aaron.

Vanessa smiled coldly.

“Tell Daniel why you’ve been secretly meeting your former brother-in-law.”

I stared at the photographs.

There was no affair.

But there was a secret.

Aaron had contacted me because he possessed something Mark left behind before his death.

Something I had not yet told Daniel.

May you like

Vanessa leaned closer.

“Still think Claire chose you?”
