Chapter 3

Nathan held Lily against the floor.
Marcus moved toward the foyer.
Another shot tore through the wall above him.
“Stay down!” he shouted.
Emergency lights flickered on.
A masked man stood near the front door with a gun.
A second intruder came through the kitchen.
Officer Grant fired.
The kitchen intruder fell behind the island.
The masked man retreated, shooting at the ceiling as he ran.
Marcus chased him outside.
Nathan carried Lily upstairs while Ruiz called for backup.
Daniel followed, limping.
They locked themselves in Lily’s bathroom.
“Did they get the drive?” Daniel asked.
Nathan opened his hand.
The flash drive was still there.
Lily covered her ears.
“I don’t want anyone else to die.”
Nathan crouched before her.
“Look at me. None of this is your fault.”
“They came because I found Mom’s box.”
“They came because bad people are afraid of the truth.”
A crash sounded downstairs.
Then silence.
Five minutes later, Ruiz knocked and identified herself.
The masked man had escaped.
The other intruder was alive but unconscious.
Marcus found a black SUV abandoned beyond the gate.
Police moved Nathan, Lily, Rosa, and Daniel to a secure hotel under assumed names.
Priya joined them to monitor Lily.
Nathan sat at a desk while Marcus connected the flash drive to an isolated computer.
Most of the files were encrypted.
One folder opened.
It contained Claire’s research notes.
She had traced Project Haven through clinics in four countries. At least nineteen children had died after receiving the experimental treatment.
Cole Biotech’s records listed every death as unrelated to the trial.
Claire had written one name repeatedly.
Thomas Cole.
Nathan’s father.
Thomas had founded the company and still served as board chairman.
Nathan had spent his life trying to earn the man’s approval.
Now he called him.
Thomas answered irritably.
“Do you know what time it is?”
“Did you know about Project Haven?”
Silence.
Then Thomas said, “Where did you hear that name?”
“Claire.”
“That is impossible.”
“She left evidence.”
Thomas’s voice dropped.
“Do not say another word over the phone. Meet me at my house.”
“No.”
“Nathan, you have no idea who is listening.”
“My daughter was abused because of these files.”
“What?”
“Vanessa drugged her. Locked her in a pantry. Tried to frame me so she could control Claire’s trust.”
Thomas sounded genuinely stunned.
But Nathan no longer trusted his instincts.
“Where is Lily now?”
“Safe.”
“Keep her away from Richard Mercer.”
“That advice is five years late.”
Thomas exhaled.
“Richard did legal work for Project Haven. He helped create the overseas charities.”
“Did you approve the trial?”
“I approved the research. I did not approve what happened later.”
“Claire’s notes connect you to the payments.”
“My signature was forged.”
“That is convenient.”
“I can prove it.”
“Then bring the proof to Detective Ruiz.”
Thomas refused.
“If I go to the police now, Richard will destroy everything.”
“He is already destroying everything.”
Nathan ended the call.
Lily stood at the bedroom door.
“Grandpa knew Mom was scared.”
Nathan looked at her.
“What do you mean?”
“I heard them fight once.”
“When?”
“Before Mom went to heaven. I was little, but I remember Grandpa yelling.”
“What did he say?”
“He said she was tearing the family apart.”
Nathan felt sick.
Thomas had told him he had not seen Claire during the week before her death.
Another lie.
Nathan sent Ruiz the address of his father’s estate.
But when police arrived, Thomas was gone.
His study had been torn apart.
Blood stained the carpet.
There was no body.
Security footage showed Thomas leaving with two men.
He did not appear restrained.
By morning, news of Vanessa’s arrest and escape had reached the media.
Reporters surrounded the mansion and company headquarters.
An anonymous source released claims that Nathan had neglected Lily and fabricated accusations against Vanessa during a custody dispute.
The story spread quickly.
Photographs of the overturned garbage cans appeared online.
So did Vanessa’s pictures of Lily’s alleged “violent episodes.”
At nine, the Cole Biotech board called an emergency meeting.
Nathan joined by secure video.
Richard Mercer appeared on-screen from an unknown location.
His face was calm.
“As counsel for several shareholders, I move that Nathan Cole be suspended as chief executive pending an investigation into child neglect and corporate misconduct.”
Nathan stared at him.
“You kidnapped my assistant.”
Richard smiled faintly.
“That accusation is exactly why this board must act. Nathan is under severe emotional stress.”
Board members avoided Nathan’s eyes.
Richard continued.
“We have also learned that he removed confidential Project Haven records and may be preparing to manipulate them.”
“You mean the records proving children died?”
The board erupted.
Some demanded clarification.
Others shouted that Nathan should stop speaking.
Then Vanessa appeared beside Richard.
She wore a bruise on her cheek that had not been there before.
“My husband is dangerous,” she said.
Nathan leaned toward the camera.
“You abused Lily.”
“I tried to help her.”
“We have recordings.”
“Recordings you edited.”
Vanessa began to cry.
“He has controlled me for years. When I confronted him about his treatment of Lily, he attacked me and used his influence to turn the police against me.”
Nathan understood the performance.
She was not trying to convince him.
She was building a public story.
The board voted.
Nine members supported suspension.
Three opposed.
Thomas did not attend.
Nathan was removed as CEO of his own company.
Minutes later, his access to corporate systems disappeared.
Marcus closed the laptop.
“They planned this long before you came home.”
Nathan looked through the hotel window.
“They expected me to return on schedule. What was supposed to happen during those two weeks?”
Daniel’s face changed.
“The guardianship hearing.”
Nathan turned.
“What hearing?”
Daniel explained that Vanessa had prepared sealed documents claiming Nathan abandoned Lily. A psychiatrist was ready to testify that Lily feared her father.
Vanessa planned to become Lily’s sole guardian before Nathan returned.
Once that happened, she would exercise influence over Lily’s voting shares.
“With your shares and Lily’s combined,” Daniel said, “Richard could control the board.”
“But I came home early.”
“And found the truth.”
Ruiz entered with an update.
The intruder from the mansion had regained consciousness.
His name was Cody Vale, a private contractor previously employed by Mercer Security.
He refused to speak.
But police found an address stored in his vehicle’s navigation system.
It led to the office of Dr. Adrian Shaw.
The physician who had prescribed Lily’s sedatives.
Ruiz obtained a warrant.
At the clinic, investigators found records for seven other children from wealthy families.
Each child had been labeled emotionally unstable.
Each case involved a disputed trust or inheritance.
“Richard has done this before,” Maya said. “He uses Shaw to create medical evidence, isolates the child, and helps a chosen guardian gain control.”
“Where is Shaw?” Nathan asked.
“Missing.”
Maya looked toward Lily’s room.
“We need a formal interview with her.”
Nathan hated the idea, but Lily agreed.
Maya sat with her in a quiet room while Nathan watched through one-way glass.
Lily described the pantry.
The hunger.
The pills.
The nights Vanessa forced her to repeat lies about Nathan.
Then Maya asked about Claire.
Lily twisted her sleeve.
“I remember the day Mom died.”
Nathan stepped closer to the glass.
“She was crying,” Lily said. “She packed a blue bag. She told me we were going to see Dad.”
“Did you leave the house?”
“We went to the garage. Grandpa was there.”
Nathan’s heart pounded.
“What happened next?” Maya asked.
“He took the bag. Mom yelled at him. Then Mr. Mercer came.”
“Richard Mercer?”
Lily nodded.
“I hid behind the stairs. Mr. Mercer said Mom had made her choice.”
“What did your grandfather do?”
“He told Mom to get into the car.”
Nathan pressed his fist against his mouth.
Lily’s memories were those of a three-year-old. They might be incomplete.
But Thomas had been there.
Richard had been there.
Claire had not driven away alone.
After the interview, Lily ran into Nathan’s arms.
“I’m sorry I forgot.”
“You were a baby.”
“Grandpa said it was a bad dream.”
Nathan closed his eyes.
Thomas had not merely lied to him.
He had convinced Lily to doubt her own memory.
Ruiz’s phone rang.
She listened, then looked at Nathan.
“We found your father.”
“Where?”
“At a private airfield.”
“Is he alive?”
“Yes. He was trying to leave the country.”
Police brought Thomas to the station.
Nathan watched the interview remotely.
Thomas admitted confronting Claire.
He admitted taking her evidence.
But he insisted Richard killed her.
“I thought I could stop her from going public,” Thomas said. “The scandal would have destroyed the company and thousands of jobs.”
Ruiz’s face remained cold.
“So you forced her into a car.”
“I told her we would discuss it privately.”
“Who drove?”
“Richard.”
“What happened?”
“We argued. Claire demanded to be released. Richard stopped near the mountain road. I got out to call Nathan.”
“Phone records show you never called him.”
Thomas lowered his head.
“I lost my nerve.”
“And then?”
“When I returned, the car was gone. Richard called an hour later and said Claire had driven away.”
“You believed him?”
“No.”
Nathan stepped away from the screen.
His father had known.
For five years, he had protected Claire’s killer.
Lily came into the room holding Rosa’s hand.
“Dad, there’s a lady on the phone. She says she’s my grandma.”
Nathan frowned.
Claire’s mother had died before Lily was born.
Rosa handed him the phone.
An elderly woman spoke quickly.
“My name is Evelyn Ward. Ethan Ward was my son. Claire gave him something before she died.”
Nathan remembered the former CFO in the photograph.
“What did she give him?”
“A key. He told me that if anyone ever mentioned Project Haven, I should call this number.”
“Where is the key?”
“With me.”
A loud knock sounded through her phone.
Evelyn gasped.
May you like
“They found me.”
The line went dead.
