Chapter 8

The bullet struck Nathan below the ribs.
He fell against the door.
Lily screamed.
Richard raised the gun again.
The nurse threw a metal tray into his face.
His second shot hit the ceiling.
Nathan grabbed Lily’s ankle and pulled her behind the nurses’ station.
Pain tore through his body.
“Run,” he gasped.
“I’m not leaving you!”
Richard entered the hallway.
Before he could fire again, Marcus came through the smoke and tackled him.
The gun slid across the floor.
Richard and Marcus crashed into a glass cabinet.
Nathan pressed both hands against his wound.
Lily knelt beside him.
“Dad, stay awake.”
“I’m here.”
“You promised.”
“I know.”
The nurse dragged them toward a treatment room.
Behind them, Richard struck Marcus with a broken shelf and ran into the stairwell.
Security locked down the hospital.
Police searched every floor.
Richard vanished inside the chaos.
Doctors rushed Nathan into surgery.
Lily waited with Rosa, Priya, and Maya.
For four hours, no one could tell her whether her father would live.
Nathan woke the next morning.
The first thing he saw was Lily sleeping in a chair beside his bed.
Her hand rested over his.
He moved his fingers.
Her eyes opened.
“You came back,” she whispered.
“I told you I would.”
She burst into tears and climbed carefully beside him.
The bullet had damaged his liver but missed the major arteries.
Doctors expected a full recovery.
Nathan did not feel lucky.
Richard was still free.
The hospital fire had been deliberately set in a storage room. Investigators found a stolen staff badge and a burned uniform near a service exit.
Richard had escaped in an ambulance.
Before leaving, he entered Vanessa’s guarded room.
The officer outside had been found unconscious.
Vanessa was gone.
At first, police assumed Richard kidnapped her.
Then surveillance video showed Vanessa walking beside him willingly.
Nathan watched the footage twice.
Lily’s conversation had seemed to change something in her.
But survival had always been Vanessa’s strongest loyalty.
Ruiz disagreed.
“Look at her left hand.”
Vanessa held her fingers against her leg, making repeated movements.
Three taps.
Two taps.
Three taps.
Maya recognized a pattern used during Lily’s therapy sessions.
It meant help.
Vanessa was signaling that she had been forced.
Richard needed her for something.
The reason became clear when Katherine Vale’s attorney filed a document.
Katherine had transferred control of several overseas accounts to Vanessa shortly before the island raid.
Vanessa possessed the only biometric access.
Richard needed her alive.
Federal agents traced the stolen ambulance to a marina.
A witness saw Richard forcing a woman onto a cargo vessel.
The ship departed for Canada before authorities arrived.
Canadian officials intercepted it two hours later.
Richard and Vanessa were not aboard.
A lifeboat was missing.
Inside the ambulance, police found blood and a phone.
The phone contained a video addressed to Nathan.
Richard stood inside a warehouse.
Vanessa was tied behind him.
“If you are seeing this, I have one final offer,” he said. “Katherine’s accounts hold enough evidence to implicate hundreds of powerful people. Give me safe passage, or Vanessa dies and the evidence disappears.”
Nathan showed the video to Ruiz.
“She knows the passwords,” he said.
“And he cannot access the accounts without her face and fingerprints.”
“Can we track the upload?”
“Not yet.”
Lily overheard Vanessa’s name.
“She helped Richard again?”
“We don’t know.”
“Are you going to save her?”
Nathan hesitated.
Vanessa had tortured his daughter.
Risking anyone’s life for her felt impossible.
Lily looked at him.
“If we leave her, are we like them?”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“Because we did not put her there.”
“But we know she’s there.”
Nathan closed his eyes.
Lily was asking the question every adult around Project Haven had avoided.
If you know someone is suffering and choose silence, what does that make you?
“We will help the police find her,” he said.
Ruiz’s team traced a background sound in the video.
Every thirty seconds, a train horn sounded twice.
Marcus compared rail crossings near the marina.
Only one industrial district matched the timing.
Warehouses covered several blocks.
Then Lily noticed blue paint on the wall behind Vanessa.
“It has a bird.”
The mark was part of a shipping company logo.
Ruiz identified the warehouse.
Police surrounded it.
Richard anticipated them again.
The building was empty except for a laptop connected to explosives.
When officers entered, a countdown began.
They evacuated before the blast.
The explosion destroyed half the warehouse.
The laptop had been playing a prerecorded video.
Richard was never there.
But Vanessa had left another signal.
On the chair where she appeared to be tied, she had scratched a number.
417.
It matched a freight container scheduled to leave the port that night.
Agents stopped the container.
Inside, they found Vanessa alone and barely conscious.
Richard had injected her with a sedative and abandoned her.
He intended the police to find her.
She was no longer useful.
Vanessa regained consciousness under guard.
She gave investigators access to Katherine’s accounts.
The records exposed bribes across hospitals, courts, law firms, and government agencies.
They also revealed a payment scheduled for the next morning.
Twenty million dollars to an account controlled by Captain Briggs.
The description read:
FINAL COLE TRANSFER.
Briggs was in federal custody.
When confronted, he laughed.
“You think the transfer is for me?”
He said Richard had used his account as a temporary channel.
The money would automatically move to another recipient after a final task.
“What task?” Ruiz asked.
Briggs looked into the interview camera.
“Killing Nathan Cole.”
Security around Nathan tripled.
No one entered his hospital wing without biometric verification.
Still, Marcus found an unauthorized medication order in the system.
Someone had scheduled Nathan to receive a fatal dose of potassium at midnight.
The order came from Priya’s account.
Priya denied entering it.
Her password had been stolen.
Investigators traced the login to Daniel’s hospital room.
Daniel was still recovering from surgery.
They searched his belongings.
A second phone was hidden beneath his mattress.
It contained messages to Richard.
Nathan refused to believe it.
Marcus read the exchanges.
Daniel had provided travel schedules, security rotations, and Nathan’s return date from Singapore.
He had told Richard about Claire’s tablet hours after Nathan found it.
He had revealed every safe-house location.
Daniel was the traitor.
Agents arrested him in his bed.
Nathan insisted on confronting him.
Daniel could not meet his eyes.
“Why?”
“My son,” Daniel whispered.
“You said they threatened him.”
“They did.”
“For five years?”
Daniel began to cry.
“At first, I cooperated to keep him safe. Then Richard paid me. I told myself I was only giving him harmless information.”
“You confirmed the guardianship plan.”
“I didn’t know Vanessa would hurt Lily.”
“Everyone says they did not know.”
“I went to Blackridge. I saved the files.”
“After helping Richard reach us again and again.”
Daniel covered his face.
Nathan’s voice broke.
“Did you tell him I was coming home early?”
“No. That is why everything fell apart. You did not tell anyone.”
It was the first honest gift Nathan’s secrecy had given him.
He had returned before their plan was ready.
He had found Lily alive.
“What is Richard’s final move?” Nathan asked.
Daniel hesitated.
Marcus stepped closer.
“If Nathan dies, the company passes into temporary board control. Katherine’s shares are frozen. Lily’s trust becomes the largest voting block.”
“And Vanessa is no longer guardian,” Nathan said.
Daniel nodded.
“So who controls Lily’s shares if I die?”
“The alternate trustee.”
“Who?”
Daniel looked toward Lily, who waited beyond the glass with Maya.
“Claire named someone in her original trust.”
Nathan already knew the answer before Daniel spoke.
“Samuel Lowe.”
“He is dead,” Marcus said.
Daniel shook his head.
“The trust includes a successor.”
“Who is it?”
Daniel swallowed.
“Richard Mercer.”
Nathan felt cold despite the blankets.
Richard did not need Vanessa anymore.
He needed Nathan dead.
Then he needed custody of Lily.
A security alarm sounded.
Maya rushed into the room.
“Lily is gone.”
May you like
On her empty chair lay a note written in a child’s handwriting.
Dad, I went to stop him. I love you.
