Chapter 7

Lily spent the night in a hospital under federal protection.
Nathan never left her side.
Doctors treated bruising around her wrists and a sprained shoulder. Physically, she would recover.
The fear would take longer.
Whenever footsteps passed the door, she woke with a gasp.
Nathan held her hand until she slept again.
At dawn, she opened her eyes.
“Did Vanessa save me?”
Nathan thought about the gunshot Vanessa had deliberately missed.
“She stopped Katherine from shooting anyone.”
“Is she good now?”
“No,” Nathan said gently. “One right choice does not erase many cruel ones.”
“But it matters?”
“Yes. It matters.”
Vanessa survived the wound.
From her hospital bed, she demanded a deal.
She would testify against Katherine and Richard in exchange for reduced charges.
Ruiz, now reinstated, attended the interview.
Nathan watched through glass.
Vanessa looked smaller without expensive clothes and perfect makeup.
“Richard is heading to Blackridge,” she said.
Ruiz placed a map on the table.
“What is Blackridge?”
“A private medical facility in Maine. Officially, it closed eight years ago.”
“What is there?”
“The master Project Haven server.”
“Why keep a server at an abandoned facility?”
“It isn’t abandoned.”
Vanessa explained that Blackridge continued testing experimental drugs on patients brought through fake charities.
Some were undocumented immigrants.
Others were children whose families had been promised free treatment.
Katherine’s network had expanded far beyond Cole Biotech.
Richard planned to erase the server and kill the remaining witnesses.
“How many patients are there?” Ruiz asked.
“Twenty or thirty.”
Nathan’s stomach turned.
“Why tell us now?”
Vanessa looked through the glass, directly at him.
“Because Katherine never intended to give me the company.”
Nathan entered the room despite Ruiz’s warning.
“You knew children were being tested.”
Vanessa’s eyes dropped.
“I knew there was a facility.”
“Did you know they were dying?”
“I tried not to know.”
“That is what my father said.”
She flinched.
Nathan leaned closer.
“You starved Lily. You drugged her. You made her believe I would be arrested if she spoke.”
“I was supposed to make her seem unstable.”
“You chose every bruise.”
Vanessa began crying.
“I hated her because she looked at me the way Claire did.”
“You knew Claire?”
“Katherine brought me to the house before Claire died. She wanted me to learn your routines.”
Nathan stared at her.
“You were chosen to marry me before Claire was murdered.”
“Yes.”
The room seemed to close around him.
Every affectionate moment with Vanessa had been an assignment.
Every promise had been strategy.
“Did you ever love me?”
Vanessa wiped her tears.
“I wanted to.”
It was a crueler answer than no.
Ruiz asked Nathan to leave.
As he reached the door, Vanessa called after him.
“Richard has someone inside your team.”
Nathan turned.
“Who?”
“I don’t know. That is why he always finds you.”
Suspicion spread immediately.
Only a handful of people had known the safe-house location.
Ruiz.
Marcus.
Maya.
Priya.
Rosa.
Daniel.
Nathan trusted all of them.
He had also trusted Vanessa.
Federal investigators reviewed phone records and devices.
Nothing obvious appeared.
Marcus suggested that Lily’s stuffed rabbit might have transmitted more than the prerecorded threat.
A second device was found beneath its ear.
It had broadcast audio and location data even after the speaker was removed.
Vanessa’s warning about a traitor might have been another manipulation.
Or Richard may have planted both.
They could not know.
A federal team prepared to raid Blackridge.
Nathan was ordered to stay in Boston.
He agreed because Lily was still hospitalized.
Then Daniel disappeared.
He left a note in his room.
I know how to stop Richard. Protect my son.
Security footage showed Daniel leaving alone.
Marcus traced his car north.
He was going to Blackridge.
Nathan called him repeatedly.
Daniel finally answered.
“Turn around,” Nathan said.
“I can get inside.”
“How?”
“I helped build the original data system.”
“You’ll be killed.”
“I can lock Richard out before he wipes it.”
“Wait for the agents.”
“There’s no time. He triggered the deletion process thirty minutes ago.”
Nathan looked at Marcus.
Marcus silently confirmed unusual network activity at Blackridge.
Daniel continued.
“I should have helped Claire. I will not fail Lily too.”
The call ended.
The federal team accelerated its operation.
Blackridge stood deep in the forest behind an electrified fence.
Thermal imaging showed armed guards and dozens of people underground.
Agents cut the power.
Marcus entered with the first team.
Nathan watched remotely from Lily’s room.
Body cameras showed narrow concrete corridors and abandoned examination rooms.
Then they reached the lower level.
Patients were locked behind glass doors.
Some were unconscious.
Others begged for help.
A little boy pressed both hands against the glass.
Nathan thought of Lily in the pantry.
“Get them out,” he whispered.
The agents split into rescue and pursuit teams.
Marcus followed the signal from the master server.
He found Daniel in the control room.
Daniel was bleeding from the shoulder but alive.
He had stopped the deletion at sixty-three percent.
Richard stood behind him with a gun.
“Drop your weapon,” Richard ordered.
Marcus complied.
Daniel looked toward the camera.
“Nathan, the files are uploading.”
Richard shot him.
Lily woke at the sound.
Nathan quickly muted the laptop, but she had seen Daniel fall.
“Uncle Daniel!”
Nathan pulled her away from the screen.
Marcus attacked Richard.
The body camera spun violently.
Gunshots echoed.
Then the feed went black.
For seven minutes, no information came from Blackridge.
Nathan stood beside Lily’s bed, unable to move.
Finally, Ruiz called.
“Marcus is alive. Daniel is in surgery.”
“And Richard?”
“Gone.”
Richard had escaped through an underground tunnel.
But Daniel’s upload succeeded.
The files reached federal servers.
They contained patient lists, payment records, internal messages, and videos of Katherine ordering staff to continue trials despite fatalities.
Project Haven was exposed.
Katherine’s attorneys withdrew from her case.
Board members resigned.
Governments in three countries opened investigations.
Cole Biotech’s stock collapsed.
Nathan watched employees leave headquarters carrying boxes.
Thousands of innocent people would lose jobs.
His father’s warning had come true.
The company was being destroyed.
But the truth had survived.
The board canceled Nathan’s removal vote.
Instead, they asked him to return and stabilize the company.
He refused.
Not yet.
Daniel survived surgery.
Nathan visited him while Lily slept.
“You should have waited,” Nathan said.
Daniel managed a weak smile.
“You sound like Marcus.”
“You nearly died.”
“But the files are safe.”
Nathan sat beside him.
“Claire trusted you.”
“I failed her.”
“You were afraid for your son.”
“That doesn’t excuse five years of silence.”
“No. But what you did today matters.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Did Lily see?”
“Yes.”
“Tell her I’m sorry.”
“Tell her yourself when you recover.”
That evening, Lily asked to see Vanessa.
Nathan initially refused.
Lily remained calm.
“I need to tell her something.”
With Maya’s guidance, they arranged a protected video call.
Vanessa appeared from her hospital room in restraints.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Then Lily raised her bandaged hands.
“You said nobody would believe me.”
Vanessa looked away.
“They believe me now,” Lily said.
“Yes.”
“You said Dad would leave.”
Vanessa’s face tightened.
“I was wrong.”
“You weren’t wrong. You lied.”
Nathan watched his daughter reclaim each truth Vanessa had stolen.
Lily continued.
“I was scared of you. I’m still scared sometimes. But I don’t have to make you happy anymore.”
Vanessa began to cry.
“I’m sorry.”
Lily shook her head.
“I don’t forgive you.”
Vanessa flinched.
“Maybe one day I will. But that will be my choice.”
The call ended.
Nathan hugged her.
“You were very brave.”
“I was shaking.”
“Brave people shake.”
For the first time since he came home, Lily smiled.
Then the hospital fire alarm sounded.
Sprinklers activated.
Smoke rolled beneath the door.
Marcus called Nathan.
“Do not use the hallway. This is not a drill.”
A nurse opened the emergency stairwell.
A man in scrubs stood on the landing.
Richard Mercer raised a gun.
Nathan shoved Lily behind him.
Richard smiled.
May you like
“You took everything from me.”
He fired.
