Chapter 9

Nathan tore the IV from his arm.
Pain bent him double, but he forced himself upright.
“How did she leave?” he demanded.
Maya’s face was pale.
“A volunteer brought therapy dogs to the pediatric wing. One of the handlers gave Lily a message.”
Security footage showed Lily following a woman into an elevator.
The woman wore a hospital badge and carried a golden retriever’s leash.
She had told Lily that Vanessa wanted to help catch Richard.
At the parking level, Lily entered a gray sedan voluntarily.
The car’s license plates were stolen.
Maya blamed herself.
Nathan did not have time for blame.
“Play the footage again.”
Lily looked nervous in the elevator.
She kept touching the watercolor stain on her sleeve.
At the car, she dropped something beside the rear tire.
Security recovered a tiny folded paper.
It contained a single word.
SCHOOL.
Nathan understood.
Richard had contacted her through someone connected to school.
Police questioned staff.
Lily’s third-grade teacher admitted receiving an email that morning.
The sender claimed to be Nathan’s federal liaison and asked her to deliver an “emergency family message” through the hospital volunteer.
The message told Lily that Richard would kill Nathan unless she came alone.
The email had originated from an office building owned by Mercer’s firm.
Agents raided it.
They found the dog handler unconscious in a closet.
Richard had taken her car and clothing, then used a female accomplice to enter the hospital.
The accomplice was Dr. Adrian Shaw’s sister.
She was arrested while trying to board a train.
Under questioning, she gave police an address.
Richard had taken Lily to the old Cole Biotech headquarters.
The building had been empty since the company moved twelve years earlier.
Nathan knew it well.
His father had built it when Nathan was a child.
Beneath the executive floor was a panic room no longer listed on modern plans.
Richard could hide there for days.
Ruiz ordered Nathan to remain at the hospital.
He ignored her.
Marcus tried to stop him.
“You can barely stand.”
“She went because she thought she was saving me.”
“And you will help her by bleeding to death?”
Nathan steadied himself against the wall.
“Get me there.”
Marcus knew he could not change his mind.
They traveled in an ambulance with a medical team.
Federal agents surrounded the old headquarters.
Richard called before they entered.
“You look terrible, Nathan.”
He was watching through the building cameras.
“Let Lily go.”
“She came willingly.”
“Because you threatened me.”
“She loves you. Claire loved you too. It made both of them easy to control.”
Nathan fought the urge to shout.
“What do you want?”
“Sign the transfer documents.”
“What transfer?”
“You will appoint me successor trustee of Lily’s shares and restore me as company chairman.”
“You already are the successor trustee.”
“Not while you live. The board can challenge the trust after everything becomes public. Your signature ends the dispute.”
“And if I sign?”
“Lily walks out.”
“You expect me to trust you?”
“No. I expect you to sacrifice yourself for your daughter.”
Documents arrived on Nathan’s phone.
The final page included a confession.
Nathan would accept responsibility for falsifying Project Haven records and murdering Claire.
Richard wanted one story to explain everything.
Nathan as the corrupt executive.
Richard as the responsible trustee who saved the company.
“I’ll sign in front of Lily,” Nathan said. “I need to see her alive.”
Richard agreed.
Nathan entered the building alone with a tracking device beneath his bandage.
Marcus warned him that the concrete walls could block the signal.
Nathan carried no weapon.
He rode the old elevator to the executive floor.
The doors opened onto a dusty hallway.
Richard waited in Thomas’s former office.
Lily sat beside him.
She was frightened but unhurt.
“Dad, I’m sorry.”
“You have nothing to be sorry for.”
Richard placed a gun against her shoulder.
“Sit.”
Nathan lowered himself into a chair.
A laptop displayed the documents.
“Sign,” Richard ordered.
Nathan read each page slowly.
He needed to give Marcus time.
Richard grew impatient.
“No one is coming. Daniel gave me every federal response protocol.”
“Daniel is under arrest.”
Richard’s smile vanished.
“He betrayed you too,” Nathan said. “Everyone eventually betrays you.”
“Sign.”
Nathan clicked through the pages.
“Tell Lily the truth first.”
“What truth?”
“Tell her what happened to Claire.”
Richard pressed the gun harder against Lily.
“She already knows enough.”
“You want my confession. I want yours.”
“This is not a negotiation.”
“Then shoot me. Without my signature, you lose everything.”
Richard studied him.
He wanted the victory.
He wanted Nathan to understand how completely he had won.
“Your wife was stubborn,” Richard said. “She thought truth mattered more than power.”
Lily stared at him.
“You killed my mom.”
Richard smiled.
“Katherine ordered me to frighten her. Thomas disabled the warning sensor. I drove Claire to the mountain road.”
“What did you do?” Nathan asked.
“She tried to escape. We fought. She struck me and ran toward the car. I caught her.”
His voice carried pride.
“I pushed the car over the edge with her inside.”
Lily began crying.
Nathan kept Richard talking.
“Captain Briggs changed the report.”
“Yes.”
“And Samuel altered the trust.”
“Samuel was weak. He tried to protect Vanessa and destroyed her instead.”
“Vanessa is cooperating.”
Richard laughed.
“She will blame everyone but herself.”
“She gave access to Katherine’s accounts.”
For the first time, Richard appeared afraid.
Nathan continued.
“Project Haven is finished. Katherine is finished. Briggs is talking. Daniel is talking. This confession is being recorded.”
Richard looked toward the ceiling cameras.
Then at Nathan’s bandage.
He crossed the room and ripped away the tracking device.
The movement reopened Nathan’s wound.
Blood spread across his shirt.
“You came here dying,” Richard said.
“I came here for her.”
Richard smashed the tracker.
Then he grabbed the laptop.
“We’re leaving.”
“You have nowhere to go.”
“I have enough money to buy another life.”
He forced Lily toward the panic room.
Nathan stood and blocked the doorway.
Richard shot him.
The bullet grazed Nathan’s shoulder and spun him against the wall.
Lily bit Richard’s hand.
He struck her.
Nathan attacked.
They fell through the panic-room door.
Richard’s gun skidded beneath a desk.
Lily crawled toward it.
“Don’t touch it!” Nathan shouted.
Richard kicked Nathan in the stomach.
Pain exploded around the surgical wound.
Richard reached the gun first.
Before he could aim, the office windows shattered.
Marcus and two agents entered on ropes from the roof.
Richard pulled Lily against him.
He held the gun beneath her chin.
“Back away!”
Agents froze.
Nathan lay on the floor, barely conscious.
Richard dragged Lily toward the private elevator.
Then the elevator doors opened.
Vanessa stood inside with Ruiz.
Vanessa wore a bulletproof vest and handcuffs.
Richard stared at her.
“You.”
“You left me inside a shipping container.”
“I should have killed you.”
Vanessa looked at Lily.
“I told her no one would believe her. I told her she was powerless.”
“Be quiet.”
“I was wrong.”
Richard swung the gun toward Vanessa.
Lily dropped to the floor.
Marcus fired.
Richard stumbled backward.
His gun discharged into the ceiling.
Nathan pulled Lily away as agents surrounded Richard.
The bullet had struck his leg.
He was alive.
He screamed while they handcuffed him.
“This company belongs to me!”
Nathan held Lily against his chest.
“No,” he said. “It belongs to everyone you tried to silence.”
Outside, cameras recorded Richard being carried into an ambulance under armed guard.
Vanessa was returned to custody.
Before leaving, she asked to speak to Lily.
Nathan allowed one sentence.
Vanessa looked through the vehicle window.
“You were never weak.”
Lily met her eyes.
“I know.”
Richard’s recorded confession reached prosecutors.
So did the panic-room video.
He was charged with Claire’s murder, kidnapping, conspiracy, attempted murder, and dozens of crimes connected to Project Haven.
For the first time, Nathan believed the nightmare might end.
Then Ruiz received a call from the hospital.
Katherine Vale had vanished from federal custody.
A guard was dead.
On Katherine’s empty bed, she had left a photograph of Lily.
