Chapter 1

Maya was only **4 years old** when her stepmother grabbed her by the hair and dragged her across the living room floor.
Her little knees scraped over the rug as she cried and reached for the couch.
“Please… I’ll be quiet. I promise.”
That was when her older brother Ethan came running downstairs.
“Let her go!”
Vanessa released Maya and immediately snapped, “She was throwing another tantrum. I barely touched her.”
Then the front door opened.
Their father, Arthur, had come home early.
He took one look at Maya’s tear-soaked face and Ethan standing protectively in front of her.
“What happened?”
Vanessa smiled nervously.
“Nothing. The kids are exaggerating again.”
But Maya suddenly reached into the pocket of her tiny yellow dress.
“Daddy… I found this where she hides your things.”
She opened her hand.
A small brass key rested in her palm.
Vanessa’s face went completely pale.
“Give me that.”
Arthur took the key first.
A paper tag was tied around it.
On one side was his late wife’s name.
On the other were three words:
**SAFE DEPOSIT BOX.**
Arthur stared at Vanessa.
She had told him that box had been emptied years ago.
Then Ethan whispered:
“She’s been trying to find that key all week.”
Vanessa backed away.

And Arthur suddenly realized Maya hadn’t been punished for misbehaving.
She had found something Vanessa desperately needed to stay hidden.
