Chapter 14

Federal agents surrounded Saint Matthew’s Cemetery before sunset.
Arthur remained in an armored vehicle with Maya and Ethan.
He wanted to join the search, but Lena refused.
“Richard has already targeted the children twice.”
“He may be inside that mausoleum.”
“Which is exactly why you stay here.”
Victoria entered with a tablet.
“The helicopter landed twelve miles east. The pilot was found tied up but alive.”
“Where is Richard?”
“He transferred to a car.”
Arthur looked toward the cemetery gates.
“He’s coming here.”
“If Ethan heard correctly.”
Ethan sat straighter.
“I did.”
Victoria gave him a reassuring look.
“I believe you.”
Maya held Claire’s scarf.
She had refused to let it go since the factory.
“Is Grandpa hiding under the ground?”
“No,” Arthur said.
“Then why did he put a box there?”
“Because he thought no one would look.”
Maya considered this.
“Mommy looked.”
Arthur smiled sadly.
“Yes. Mommy always looked.”
Samuel arrived with new information.
He had located the complete copy of Claire’s trust agreement in an old court filing.
The alternate trustee was Victoria Hale.
Richard had tried to erase her identity because if Arthur became incapacitated, Victoria—not Vanessa—would control the children’s shares.
“That is why Claire needed you alive,” Arthur said.
Victoria nodded.
“And why Richard tried to kill me twelve years ago.”
Samuel turned to Arthur.
“There’s another provision. If Richard is proven alive before your birthday, every transfer he made after his supposed death becomes fraudulent and automatically reverses.”
“How much money?”
“Nearly six hundred million dollars.”
Arthur exhaled.
Richard was not only trying to retain control.
He was facing total financial destruction.
An agent signaled from the cemetery.
The mausoleum had been opened.
Arthur watched the live body-camera feed.
Officers descended a narrow staircase beneath the empty stone coffin.
The chamber below contained metal cabinets, servers, cash, passports, and recordings.
Victoria whispered, “We have him.”
Then the video feed cut out.
Gunfire erupted over the radio.
Lena ordered the children onto the floor.
Arthur covered them.
A black car crashed through the cemetery’s side gate.
Richard was behind the wheel.
He drove directly toward the armored vehicle.
Agents fired at the tires.
The car swerved, struck a stone monument, and rolled onto its side.
Arthur told Ethan to stay with Maya.
Then he left the vehicle before Lena could stop him.
Richard crawled through the broken windshield.
His forehead was bleeding, but he remained conscious.
He held a small remote in one hand.
“Stay back!” he shouted.
Arthur stopped.
“What is that?”
“A cleansing device.”
Victoria emerged from behind the mausoleum.
“He wired the archive to burn.”
Richard lifted the remote.
“One press, and every record disappears.”
“You’ll still be alive,” Arthur said. “That alone proves fraud.”
“Fraud can be negotiated.”
“Murder cannot.”
Richard smiled.
“You have no proof I ordered Claire’s death.”
“Vanessa will testify.”
“Vanessa worships me.”
“You abandoned her.”
“She will forgive me.”
Arthur shook his head.
“You still don’t understand what you created.”
“I created survivors.”
“You created enemies.”
Richard’s thumb hovered over the button.
Victoria raised her weapon.
“Drop it.”
“If you shoot, my hand closes.”
Arthur looked toward the mausoleum.
Agents were still inside.
If the archive burned, they could die.
“What do you want?” Arthur asked.
“A car and a clear route out.”
“You won’t make it through the gate.”
“Then the agents below won’t make it out either.”
Arthur stepped forward.
“Take me instead.”
“No,” Victoria said.
Richard’s eyes sharpened.
“Why would I need you?”
“My signature.”
“The documents can wait.”
“My birthday cannot. Four days remain.”
Richard considered it.
Arthur continued.
“You need me alive and cooperative. Release the archive team. I leave with you.”
“Dad!” Ethan shouted from the vehicle.
Arthur did not turn.
Richard looked toward the children.
“Such loyalty.”
“They learned it from Claire.”
“Claire taught them weakness.”
“She taught them that people matter.”
“And now you are offering your life for theirs.”
“Yes.”
Richard smiled.
“Proving my point.”
“No. Proving hers.”
Richard ordered Arthur to walk toward the damaged black car.
The vehicle could not move.
He pointed to an agent’s SUV instead.
“Keys.”
Lena threw them onto the grass.
Arthur caught them.
Richard moved behind him, still holding the remote.
“Tell the archive team to withdraw.”
Victoria spoke into her radio.
Agents began emerging from the mausoleum.
Arthur counted them.
One.
Two.
Three.
The fourth agent appeared carrying a hard drive.
Richard shouted, “Leave it!”
The agent placed it on the ground.
When everyone was clear, Richard forced Arthur into the SUV.
“I drive,” Richard said.
Arthur entered the passenger side.
Richard climbed behind the wheel.
Before he could start the engine, Maya ran from the armored vehicle.
“Daddy!”
Arthur’s heart stopped.
“Maya, go back!”
Richard grabbed her through the open window.
He pulled her into the SUV.
Arthur lunged.
Richard pressed the remote against Maya’s chest.
“She comes with us.”
“No!”
Maya screamed for Ethan.
Richard locked the doors and accelerated.
Agents could not fire with Maya inside.
Arthur wrapped both arms around her.
“You’re okay. I have you.”
Richard drove through the shattered gate.
“Your daughter has terrible timing.”
“You let her go.”
“She is insurance.”
“She is four.”
“So was Vanessa when I first taught her not to cry.”
Arthur stared at him.
“What did you do to her?”
“I taught her that tears invite punishment.”
For the first time, Arthur understood the source of Vanessa’s cruelty.
It did not excuse her.
But it revealed Richard’s pattern.
He did not raise children.
He broke them and called the pieces loyal.
“You destroyed her.”
“I made her useful.”
Maya hid her face against Arthur.
“Don’t listen to him,” Arthur whispered.
Richard drove toward the river.
Police followed at a distance.
He displayed a second device.
“If they come closer, the cemetery burns.”
Arthur looked at the remote.
A small green light blinked.
Claire’s blue scarf still hung from his wrist.
Maya touched it.
Arthur remembered Moonfish.
Drop low.
Cover your head.
Wait for the right moment.
He needed Richard to slow down.
“Where are we going?”
“A private airstrip.”
“You won’t reach it.”
“I have spent twenty years preparing exits.”
“But you didn’t prepare for Claire.”
Richard’s jaw tightened.
“She was an accountant with sentimental ideas.”
“She uncovered everything.”
“She died.”
“And still beat you.”
Richard struck Arthur with the back of his hand.
The SUV swerved.
Maya cried out.
Arthur pulled her down.
The remote slipped from Richard’s fingers and landed near the brake pedal.
Richard reached for it.
Arthur kicked it beneath the passenger seat.
Richard slammed on the brakes.
The SUV spun across the road and hit a barrier.
Airbags exploded.
Arthur shielded Maya.
Richard’s head struck the side window.
For several seconds, no one moved.
Arthur pushed the airbag away.
“Maya?”
She coughed.
“I’m here.”
He unbuckled her.
Richard groaned.
Arthur searched beneath the seat and found the remote.
Before he could open the door, Richard grabbed his wrist.
“You ungrateful child.”
Arthur struck him.
Richard’s grip loosened.
Arthur climbed out with Maya.
Police vehicles approached.
He carried her toward them.
Behind him, Richard emerged with a gun.
“Arthur!”
Arthur turned.
Richard aimed at his back.
Ethan suddenly appeared beside the lead police car.
He had hidden in the rear of Lena’s vehicle when she joined the pursuit.
“Grandpa!” Ethan shouted.
Richard looked toward him.
That single distraction gave Victoria a clear shot.
She fired.
The bullet hit Richard’s shoulder.
His gun fell.
Agents tackled him.
Arthur carried Maya toward Ethan.
“You were supposed to stay safe!”
Ethan began crying.
“I couldn’t let her go alone.”
Arthur wanted to be angry.
Instead, he pulled both children against him.
Victoria recovered the remote.
“It isn’t connected to anything,” she said after examining it.
Arthur looked toward Richard.
“He was bluffing.”
Richard laughed from the ground.
“I never needed explosives. Fear was always enough.”
Arthur walked toward him.
Richard looked up.
For the first time, he appeared small.
“You almost made me believe that,” Arthur said.
Agents handcuffed Richard.
As they lifted him, he smiled again.
“You think arresting me ends this?”
“It ends your control.”
“You carry my name.”
“I can change a name.”
“The company carries it.”
“Then I’ll change that too.”
Richard’s smile vanished.
Arthur returned to his children.
Maya touched his bruised cheek.
“Did Grandpa hurt you?”
“He tried.”
“Is he going to our house?”
“Never again.”
She looked toward the police car where Richard sat in handcuffs.
Then she waved Claire’s scarf at him.
“Mommy found you.”
Richard turned his face away.
That night, investigators copied the entire archive.
It contained decades of crimes.
Judges had been bribed.
Witnesses had been threatened.
Employees had been blackmailed.
There were also complete recordings of Vanessa discussing Claire’s medication.
But one file was missing.
The original medical order carrying the name of the person who authorized the fatal dosage.
Vanessa insisted Richard signed it.
Richard insisted Vanessa acted alone.
Julian blamed both of them.
Without the order, prosecutors could prove conspiracy and fraud, but the murder case remained uncertain.
Arthur believed the missing document had to exist.
Claire never saved partial evidence.
Back at the secure facility, Maya finally slept.
Ethan sat with Arthur and Victoria.
“Mom hid things in places people didn’t look,” Ethan said.
Arthur nodded.
“That’s how she protected the key.”
“She hid the paper too.”
“What paper?”
“The medicine paper.”
Arthur leaned forward.
“You saw it?”
Ethan squeezed his eyes shut, trying to remember.
“Mom gave me an envelope. She told me to put it where no grown-up would ever search.”
“Where?”
“I don’t remember.”
Arthur touched his shoulder.
“Take your time.”
Ethan’s face brightened suddenly.
“The tooth box.”
Maya had lost her first baby tooth unusually early after falling in the garden.
Claire placed it inside a tiny silver box on Maya’s nursery shelf.
Vanessa considered it childish.
She never touched it.
The box was still inside the Bennett house.
Arthur called Lena.
Officers searched Maya’s room.
The silver box was empty.
But beneath its velvet lining, they found a folded medical order.
It authorized a dosage six times higher than Claire’s prescribed amount.
The signature belonged to Dr. Nathan Hale.
Victoria stared at the name.
“That’s my uncle.”
“Vanessa’s uncle too?” Arthur asked.
“Yes.”
Samuel searched the medical registry.
Nathan Hale had been reported dead five years earlier.
Another dead person who might still be alive.
Then Arthur read the date on the order.
It had been signed the morning Claire died.
A handwritten note appeared at the bottom.
**ADMINISTERED BY A.B.**
Arthur’s initials were Arthur Bennett.
Someone had created evidence to frame him.
May you like
But on the back, Claire had written one final message:
**A.B. IS NOT ARTHUR. FIND ANNABELLE.**
