Amazed

Chapter 11

Arthur could not speak.

He had heard that voice in dreams for years.

“Father?”

Ethan stared at him.

Maya climbed into Samuel’s arms as if she sensed the danger.

Richard laughed softly.

“So Claire finally managed to deliver her little message.”

“You’re alive.”

“Obviously.”

“You let us mourn you.”

“I did what was necessary.”

“You stole from my children.”

“I built everything those children have.”

“The trust belonged to Claire.”

“The trust was funded with my company.”

Arthur’s anger broke through the shock.

“You killed her.”

Richard became quiet.

Then he said, “Vanessa was careless.”

The words were not a denial.

Arthur gripped the phone.

“You knew she changed Claire’s medication.”

“I knew Claire was becoming inconvenient.”

Samuel motioned for Lena.

She activated recording equipment and began tracing the call.

Arthur kept his father talking.

“Where are you?”

“Close enough to see how poorly you’ve managed my family.”

“They are not your family anymore.”

“Blood does not work that way.”

“You disappeared.”

“I removed myself from a dangerous legal situation.”

“You committed fraud.”

“I survived.”

“You left Julian to clean up your crimes.”

“Julian was always weak. Unfortunately, so are you.”

Arthur looked at Ethan.

His son was scared, but he remained beside his sister.

Arthur saw more courage in that child than Richard had shown in his entire life.

“I’m nothing like you.”

“That is your problem.”

“What do you want?”

“The original trust documents.”

“No.”

“Your birthday is in eight days. If those documents are filed, the transfer becomes permanent.”

“Good.”

Richard sighed.

“You still think this is about money.”

“What else could it be?”

“Control. Your wife understood that. Claire was clever enough to discover the truth, but not clever enough to survive it.”

Arthur lunged toward the phone as if he could reach through it.

Lena held up a hand, reminding him to stay calm.

“What did you do to her?”

“I gave Vanessa an assignment. Vanessa exceeded it.”

“And you let her marry me.”

“I encouraged it.”

“Why?”

“Because you are predictable when you’re in love.”

Arthur closed his eyes.

Every tender moment with Vanessa had been designed.

Every confession.

Every promise.

Every time she held him while he cried for Claire.

It had all been part of a plan.

Richard continued.

“Bring the documents to the old Bennett factory tomorrow at noon.”

“You expect me to walk into a trap?”

“I expect you to protect your children.”

“They’re already protected.”

“No one is protected while Vanessa is free.”

Arthur’s eyes moved to Lena.

She wrote something on a notepad.

**KEEP HIM TALKING.**

“Where is Vanessa?”

Richard chuckled.

“She’s angry with you.”

“She hurt Maya.”

“Children recover.”

Arthur’s voice dropped.

“Say that again.”

“Do not become emotional.”

“You don’t deserve to speak their names.”

“Then listen carefully. If I do not have those papers by noon tomorrow, Vanessa will release evidence proving you abused Claire during her illness.”

Arthur stared at the phone.

“That’s impossible.”

“Is it?”

“You fabricated evidence.”

“You signed medication authorizations. You argued with Claire in the hospital. Several nurses heard you raise your voice.”

“Because they wouldn’t let me see her.”

“And who controlled the visitor list?”

“Vanessa.”

“Exactly. Vanessa documented everything.”

Arthur understood.

They had not merely killed Claire.

They had prepared to blame him.

Richard continued.

“There are photographs of bruises, recordings of arguments, and statements from paid witnesses. The world will believe you tormented a dying woman.”

“My children know who I am.”

“Courts do not ask children to decide.”

Lena’s expression tightened.

The trace was not working.

Richard was using an encrypted line.

Arthur asked, “If you have so much evidence, why do you need the documents?”

“Because scandals can be survived. Legal ownership is less flexible.”

“You’re afraid.”

Richard’s tone sharpened.

“Do not confuse patience with fear.”

“You faked your death and hid for years. You’re terrified of losing.”

“I am giving you a chance to save yourself.”

“No. You’re giving me a chance to surrender.”

Richard paused.

Then he said, “Ask Ethan what he found under his pillow.”

Arthur turned.

Ethan’s face changed.

“What is he talking about?”

Slowly, Ethan reached into his backpack.

He removed a small white envelope.

“I found it when I packed.”

Arthur took it.

Inside was a photograph of Ethan and Maya asleep in their bedrooms.

It had been taken two nights earlier.

On the back, someone had written:

**THE HOUSE IS NEVER LOCKED TO FAMILY.**

Arthur felt cold rage spread through him.

Richard spoke again.

“Noon tomorrow.”

The call ended.

Lena immediately contacted the federal authorities.

“This is larger than a domestic case now,” she said. “Financial crimes, fraudulent death records, extortion, attempted kidnapping.”

Arthur barely heard her.

Someone had entered his children’s bedrooms while he slept.

Maya tugged at his sleeve.

“Was Grandpa talking?”

Arthur crouched.

“Yes.”

“I thought Grandpa was in heaven.”

“So did I.”

“Is Mommy with him?”

“No, sweetheart.”

“Good.”

The simple answer silenced everyone.

Maya looked at the frozen image of Claire on the second phone.

“Mommy wouldn’t like him.”

Arthur kissed her forehead.

“No. She wouldn’t.”

They left the station under police escort.

At Samuel’s house, Ethan refused to sleep in a separate room from Maya.

Samuel arranged two beds in the guest room.

Arthur checked the windows three times.

He placed a chair beneath the doorknob even though officers stood outside.

Maya lay under the blankets holding Claire’s old scarf, which Samuel had preserved with the documents.

“Daddy?”

“I’m here.”

“Why did Vanessa pull my hair?”

Arthur sat beside her.

“Because she was angry and cruel.”

“Was it because I took the key?”

“No.”

“She said I ruin everything.”

Arthur took her little hand.

“You saved us.”

Maya looked doubtful.

“I did?”

“You found something your mother wanted us to find.”

“Did Mommy leave it for me?”

“She left it for all of us.”

Ethan spoke from the second bed.

“Mom knew Maya would be brave.”

Arthur looked at him.

“You were brave too.”

“I should have stopped Vanessa sooner.”

“You are eight years old. Protecting this family was my responsibility.”

“But Maya is my sister.”

“And you protected her when I didn’t.”

Arthur had to look away.

Ethan’s voice softened.

“Are they going to arrest Vanessa?”

“Yes.”

“What if she lies?”

“She will.”

“What if people believe her?”

Arthur thought of Richard’s threat.

“Then we tell the truth louder.”

After the children fell asleep, Arthur met Samuel downstairs.

The evidence from the box covered the dining table.

Claire’s original trust documents were inside a red folder.

Samuel pointed to a clause.

“On your fortieth birthday, voting control of Bennett Development transfers to you as guardian of the children’s shares.”

“And Richard loses access.”

“Yes. But there’s a condition.”

Arthur read it.

“If I am declared mentally incapable or charged with harming Claire, control passes to the alternate trustee.”

“Who is the alternate trustee?” Arthur asked.

Samuel turned the page.

The signature line had been damaged by water.

Only the first initial remained.

A single V.

“Vanessa?” Arthur asked.

“No. Claire would never have chosen her.”

“Then who?”

“I don’t know. The bank copy may identify the person, but Richard likely destroyed it.”

Arthur examined Claire’s financial records.

Large transfers had moved through shell companies.

One company appeared repeatedly.

Vale Holdings.

The initial V.

“Could Vale Holdings be the alternate trustee?”

Samuel shook his head.

“A company cannot serve under this version of the document.”

Arthur opened Claire’s second envelope.

Inside was a photograph of a woman standing beside Claire at college graduation.

Arthur recognized Claire, younger and laughing.

The other woman looked almost exactly like her.

On the back, Claire had written:

**VICTORIA KNOWS THE ORIGINAL TERMS. FIND HER BEFORE RICHARD DOES.**

“Who is Victoria?” Arthur asked.

Samuel stared at the picture.

“I have never seen her.”

Arthur searched the safe deposit box again.

At the bottom was a birth certificate.

The name read Victoria Eleanor Hale.

Arthur froze at the surname.

“Hale.”

Vanessa’s last name before marriage had been Hale.

Samuel took the certificate.

“Victoria and Vanessa may be related.”

The document listed Victoria’s mother as Eleanor Hale.

The father’s name was blank.

Claire’s name appeared in the section for reporting witness.

Arthur turned over the college photograph.

A phone number was written beneath Victoria’s name.

He called it.

The number was disconnected.

Samuel searched public databases.

Victoria Hale had disappeared twelve years earlier after testifying in a federal fraud investigation involving Richard Bennett.

No death certificate existed.

No current address.

Arthur studied the picture again.

“What did Claire know?”

Before Samuel could answer, a security alarm sounded.

Officers shouted outside.

Arthur ran to the guest room.

The children were awake.

A red light blinked near the window.

Smoke began pouring beneath the bedroom door.

“Dad!” Ethan cried.

Arthur wrapped Maya in a blanket and grabbed Ethan’s hand.

He opened the door.

Flames climbed the wall at the end of the hallway.

Someone had set the downstairs entrance on fire.

Samuel appeared through the smoke.

“The back stairs!”

They ran.

A window shattered below.

A masked figure climbed into the house.

Arthur pushed the children behind him.

The figure raised both hands.

“Don’t scream.”

Arthur reached for a heavy lamp.

The stranger pulled off the mask.

May you like

She was a woman in her forties with Claire’s eyes.

“My name is Victoria Hale,” she said. “And if Richard finds out I’m alive, none of you will survive the night.”
