Amazed

Chapter 5

Arthur could not take his eyes off the photograph.

Ethan looked terrified, but he was awake.

A dark bruise was forming near his temple.

“I’m going,” Arthur said.

The detective took the phone from him.

“No, you’re not.”

“That is my son.”

“And Julian expects panic to make you careless.”

“He’s nine years old.”

“We will find him.”

Arthur grabbed the phone back.

“You didn’t find Julian.”

David stepped between them.

“Arthur, listen. If you deliver the evidence, Julian may kill both of you.”

“If I don’t, he may kill Ethan.”

Maya’s crying continued through the call with Ruth.

Arthur lowered his voice.

“Keep Maya inside. Do not open the door for anyone except the police.”

“Bring Ethan back,” Ruth said.

“I will.”

The kidnappers sent an address ten minutes later.

It was an abandoned warehouse owned by one of Julian’s shell companies.

The message repeated the demand.

Arthur had one hour.

Police prepared a duplicate safe deposit box filled with useless documents. A tracking device was placed inside the handle.

Arthur wore a small transmitter under his shirt.

“You will follow our instructions,” the lead detective said. “You will not make sudden moves. You will not try to be a hero.”

“I’m a father. There is a difference.”

David gripped Arthur’s shoulder.

“Bring yourself back too. Those children cannot lose both parents.”

Arthur drove to the warehouse alone while unmarked police vehicles followed at a distance.

The building stood behind a chain-link fence near an old railroad yard.

The gate was open.

Arthur carried the box inside.

“Ethan!”

His voice echoed through the building.

A light came on above him.

Julian appeared on a metal walkway.

He held Ethan by the shoulder.

Arthur’s son looked small beneath the harsh light.

“Dad!”

Arthur stepped forward.

Julian pressed something against Ethan’s side.

It was not a gun.

It was a syringe.

Arthur stopped.

“The box,” Julian called.

“Let him go.”

“You are not in a position to negotiate.”

“What’s in the syringe?”

“Something to make him sleep.”

“That is what you told Vanessa about Claire.”

Julian’s jaw tightened.

“Put the box on the floor.”

Arthur obeyed.

“Slide it toward the stairs.”

Arthur kicked it gently.

The box scraped across the concrete.

Ethan stared down at him.

“Dad, don’t give it to him.”

Julian tightened his grip.

“Be quiet.”

Arthur raised his hands.

“You have what you want.”

“Not yet.”

Julian led Ethan down the metal stairs.

Arthur could see the boy’s hands were tied in front of him.

“Walk toward me,” Julian ordered.

Arthur moved slowly.

“Stop.”

He stopped ten feet away.

Julian opened the box.

The moment he saw the false documents, his expression changed.

“You think I’m stupid?”

“I think you’re desperate.”

Julian threw the box aside.

“You brought the police.”

“No.”

Julian ripped open Arthur’s jacket and found the transmitter.

He crushed it beneath his shoe.

Ethan flinched.

Julian looked toward the shadowed windows.

“Tell them to leave.”

“The transmitter is broken.”

“But they are listening.”

Arthur raised his voice.

“Stay back! He has Ethan!”

Julian smiled.

“Good.”

He pulled Ethan toward a side door.

Arthur followed.

“Where are you taking him?”

“To trade for the real evidence.”

“With whom?”

“Claire’s sister.”

Arthur stopped.

“You found Joanna?”

“She found me.”

A woman’s voice came from the darkness.

“No, Julian. I found Ethan.”

Joanna stepped out from behind a support beam.

She was in her mid-forties, with Claire’s eyes and the same determined expression Arthur remembered from Claire’s final video.

She held a small handgun pointed at Julian.

“Release the boy.”

Julian laughed.

“You were always dramatic.”

“You were always a coward.”

Arthur looked at Joanna.

“How did you get here?”

“I followed him from Ruth’s house.”

Julian dragged Ethan closer to his chest.

“If you shoot, you may hit the child.”

Joanna kept the weapon steady.

“You won’t use the syringe.”

“You don’t know what’s inside it.”

“Yes, I do. Saline. You wouldn’t risk another murder with police nearby.”

Julian’s smile faded.

Ethan suddenly drove his heel down on Julian’s foot.

Julian cursed and loosened his grip.

Arthur lunged.

He pulled Ethan away as Julian swung at him.

The blow struck Arthur’s shoulder.

Joanna rushed forward, but Julian knocked the gun from her hand.

It slid beneath a pallet.

Arthur shielded Ethan.

“Run!”

Ethan raced toward the entrance.

Julian grabbed Arthur’s jacket and slammed him against a support post.

“You should have left the box buried.”

Arthur drove his elbow into Julian’s chest.

Julian staggered.

Joanna struck him across the back with a loose wooden board.

He turned and shoved her down.

Police flooded the warehouse.

“Hands where we can see them!”

Julian ran toward the rear door.

Two officers cut him off.

He tried another exit, but more officers entered.

For a second, Julian stood trapped in the center of the warehouse.

Then he raised the syringe toward his own neck.

“Stay back!”

Arthur held Ethan against him.

Julian’s eyes moved wildly around the room.

“You think Claire was innocent?” he shouted. “She stole everything from me!”

“It belonged to her,” Joanna said as an officer helped her stand.

“Our father promised me the company.”

“No. He offered you a job. You wanted ownership.”

Julian laughed.

“And what did you do? You disappeared and left us to clean up the mess.”

“You tried to kill me.”

“I scared you.”

“You drove my car off the road.”

Arthur looked at Joanna.

“You were almost killed?”

“My brakes failed after I found his forged documents. Claire helped me disappear because we knew Julian would try again.”

Julian pointed the syringe at her.

“You turned Claire against me.”

“Claire saw you clearly.”

Police ordered him to drop the syringe.

Julian looked at Ethan.

The boy was safe in Arthur’s arms.

His final advantage was gone.

He released the syringe.

It hit the concrete.

Officers forced him to the ground and handcuffed him.

Julian turned his head toward Arthur.

“This isn’t over.”

Arthur held Ethan tighter.

“For you, it is.”

Outside, paramedics examined Ethan.

Arthur knelt in front of him.

“Did he hurt you?”

“He hit the guard, then put me in the car.”

“Did he inject you?”

“No.”

Arthur pulled him close.

“I thought you wouldn’t come.”

“I will always come.”

Ethan began crying against his chest.

“I was so scared.”

“I know.”

“But I remembered what you said.”

“What?”

“That brave people can be scared.”

Arthur closed his eyes.

“You were braver than any child should ever have to be.”

Joanna stood several feet away.

She had a cut on her lip, but she refused medical treatment.

Arthur approached her after Ethan was inside the ambulance.

“You saved my son.”

“He saved himself. I only created an opening.”

“Why didn’t Claire tell me you were alive?”

“She wanted to.”

“Why didn’t she?”

“Because Julian had people watching you.”

Arthur looked at the police cars.

“Who else was helping him?”

Joanna’s eyes darkened.

“Your company’s entire legal and financial team.”

Arthur thought of the missing money.

“How deep does this go?”

“Deeper than the bank box.”

She handed him a small metal key.

“This opens a storage unit in my name. Claire sent me the original trust and copies of everything Julian forged.”

“Why didn’t you go to the police?”

“I did. The detective I spoke to informed Julian.”

Arthur stared at her.

“Who?”

“Detective Mark Danner.”

Arthur knew the name.

Danner had led the investigation into Claire’s death.

The same man had accepted the doctor’s report and told Arthur an autopsy was unnecessary.

“Is he still a detective?”

“He was promoted.”

Arthur looked toward the officers who had arrested Julian.

“Does he know you’re here?”

“Not yet.”

A black SUV turned into the warehouse yard.

Joanna’s face changed.

“That’s him.”

The SUV stopped.

A tall man in a dark coat stepped out.

Detective Danner.

He spoke briefly with the lead officer, then walked toward Arthur.

“I heard your boy was recovered. Glad he’s safe.”

Arthur placed himself between Danner and Joanna.

Danner looked past him.

“Well,” he said quietly. “Joanna Hale. A ghost returns.”

Joanna’s hand closed around Arthur’s arm.

Danner smiled.

“You have caused a great deal of trouble.”

Arthur stared at him.

“You buried evidence in my wife’s death.”

Danner’s expression remained calm.

“Be careful with accusations.”

“Claire had proof.”

“Then I’m sure you’ll provide it.”

“You already know what it says.”

Danner glanced toward Julian.

“You’re emotional. Understandable after today.”

He leaned closer.

“But if I were you, I would focus on my children and let the police handle the past.”

“People keep telling me to stop asking questions.”

“Maybe you should listen.”

Joanna spoke.

“Does Julian know you were the one who gave Dr. Mercer the false toxicology report?”

Danner’s eyes changed.

Only for a moment.

Then he smiled again.

“You are wanted for questioning in an old fraud investigation.”

Joanna stepped back.

Arthur blocked him.

“She isn’t going anywhere with you.”

Danner looked at the lead detective.

“Arrest her.”

The detective hesitated.

“On what charge?”

“I’ll send the warrant.”

“Show it now,” Arthur said.

Danner’s smile vanished.

“This is police business.”

“No. This is my family.”

Danner turned away and lifted his phone.

Joanna whispered to Arthur.

“We need to reach the storage unit before he does.”

Arthur looked at Ethan in the ambulance.

“I’m not leaving my son.”

“Then send someone you trust.”

Arthur turned to David.

The attorney had just arrived at the warehouse.

Arthur handed him the key.

“Go.”

David closed his hand around it.

“What am I looking for?”

“Everything Danner wants destroyed.”

David left with two private guards.

Danner watched the car disappear.

His expression told Arthur enough.

He knew exactly where they were going.

At the hospital, Ethan was examined and released.

Maya ran to him in the secured waiting room.

She threw her arms around his waist.

“You came back!”

Ethan hugged her.

“I told you I would.”

Ruth looked at Joanna across the room.

For a long moment, neither sister moved.

Then Ruth crossed the space between them and slapped Joanna.

Everyone froze.

Ruth’s hand trembled.

“You let us think you were dead.”

Joanna’s eyes filled with tears.

“I was trying to keep Claire safe.”

“She needed you.”

“I know.”

Ruth pulled Joanna into her arms.

Both women began to cry.

Arthur turned away to give them privacy.

His phone rang.

David.

“Did you reach the unit?”

“Yes,” David said. “But someone got here first.”

Arthur’s stomach tightened.

“Is everything gone?”

“No.”

“What happened?”

“The lock was broken, but Claire prepared for this. The shelves are filled with copies.”

Arthur exhaled.

David continued.

“There is something else.”

“What?”

“A video addressed to Ethan.”

Arthur looked across the room at his son.

“What does Claire say?”

“I haven’t played it.”

“Bring it here.”

“I will. But Arthur, the storage unit contains adoption records.”

Arthur’s heart stopped.

“For whom?”

David hesitated.

“Maya.”

Arthur looked at the little girl standing beside Ethan.

Julian had said Claire lied about her.

“Is Maya adopted?”

“No,” David said. “Claire is listed as her biological mother.”

“Then what are the records?”

“They name a second child.”

Arthur’s voice dropped.

May you like

“What second child?”

“According to these documents, Claire gave birth to twins.”
