Chapter 1

Minutes before my son’s wedding, I opened the bride’s dressing-room door and saw her slap his six-year-old daughter.
Lily’s small body jerked sideways.
Her flower crown fell onto the carpet.
“You’ll call me Mom after today,” Vanessa hissed. “And you will stop talking about your real mother.”
Lily pressed one hand against her red cheek.
“But Mommy is still my mommy.”
Vanessa grabbed her arm and forced her onto her knees.
“Your mother is dead. I’m the only mother you have now.”
I crossed the room before she could raise her hand again.
I caught Vanessa’s wrist.
“Touch my granddaughter one more time.”
Vanessa stared at me.
Then she smiled.
It was not fear in her eyes.
It was confidence.
“You should leave, Margaret.”
I shoved her away from Lily.
Behind Vanessa, one of the bridesmaids gasped.
Her name was Claire.
She stood near the mirror, holding her phone against her chest.
Vanessa turned on her.
“Were you recording?”
Claire stepped backward.
I lifted Lily into my arms and ran into the hallway.
“Grandma, please don’t let her marry Daddy.”
“I won’t.”
The ceremony was supposed to begin in five minutes.
Music floated from the ballroom.
Nearly two hundred guests were waiting.
My son Daniel stood near the entrance with his best man.
The moment he saw Lily crying, he rushed toward us.
“What happened?”
Lily buried her face against my shoulder.
Vanessa appeared behind me.
Her voice changed instantly.
“She had a tantrum. Your mother attacked me.”
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
Then at the mark on Lily’s cheek.
“Lily, tell me the truth.”
Vanessa moved closer.
“Daniel, she lies when she wants attention.”
Lily trembled.
Vanessa’s eyes stayed fixed on her.
That was when I understood.
My granddaughter was not only afraid of Vanessa.
She had been trained to remain silent.
I pointed toward Claire.
“She recorded everything.”
The color disappeared from Vanessa’s face.
Daniel held out his hand.
“Give me the phone.”
Claire unlocked it and played the video.
The hallway became silent.
We heard Vanessa ordering Lily to kneel.
We heard the slap.
We heard Lily beg her not to erase her mother.
Daniel watched the recording twice.
Then he slowly removed the white rose from his jacket.
Vanessa reached for him.
“It looks worse than it was.”
He threw the boutonniere at her feet.
“There is no wedding.”
Vanessa’s expression twisted.
“You can’t humiliate me in front of everyone.”
“You hit my daughter.”
“She needs discipline!”
Daniel took Lily from my arms.
Vanessa tried to block the hallway.
“You walk away now, and I will destroy you.”
Daniel did not stop.
“Security.”
Two guards hurried over.
Vanessa screamed as they pulled her away.
Her mother, Patricia, burst from the ballroom and demanded an explanation.
Daniel walked past her without answering.
The guests stood as he entered, carrying Lily in his arms.
He stepped onto the stage.
“The wedding is canceled,” he said. “Please go home.”
Shock moved through the room.
Lily’s arms tightened around his neck.
As we reached the exit, Vanessa shouted from behind us.
“You think this is over?”
Daniel kept walking.
Then she said something that made him stop.
“You don’t even know what your daughter has been hiding.”
Lily went completely still.
Daniel looked down at her.
“What does she mean?”
Lily began to cry again.
Vanessa smiled through her tears.

“Ask her what she found in my suitcase.”
