Amazed

Chapter 2

Daniel carried Lily into a private conference room while I locked the door behind us.

The wedding guests filled the hallway with confused voices.

Someone knocked.

Someone else called Daniel’s name.

He ignored them all.

He sat beside Lily on a couch.

“Sweetheart, what did you find?”

Lily twisted the ribbon on her dress.

Vanessa’s threat had terrified her.

Daniel softened his voice.

“You’re not in trouble.”

“I went into her room yesterday.”

“Why?”

“She took Mommy’s necklace.”

Daniel looked at me.

The necklace had belonged to Emma, Lily’s mother.

Emma had worn it every day before the car accident that killed her three years earlier.

Daniel kept it in a locked box for Lily.

“How did Vanessa get it?” I asked.

Lily wiped her face.

“She had your key, Daddy.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“What else was in the suitcase?”

“Papers.”

“What kind of papers?”

“I can’t read all the big words.”

She reached inside the pocket of her flower-girl dress.

Then she pulled out a folded sheet.

Vanessa had planned to send Lily to a residential behavioral program after the honeymoon.

The document already had Daniel’s electronic signature.

My son stared at it.

“I never signed this.”

A knock struck the door.

“Daniel, open up,” Patricia called. “Vanessa is injured.”

I opened the door only wide enough to see her.

Patricia’s face was hard.

“My daughter is calling the police. Margaret assaulted her.”

“She slapped a child.”

“That video has been deleted.”

I glanced toward Claire.

She checked her phone.

Her expression changed.

“It’s gone.”

Vanessa had known Claire’s password because the bridesmaids had shared photos through a wedding account.

Claire searched her recently deleted folder.

Empty.

Patricia smiled.

“No video. No proof.”

Daniel stepped toward her.

“The mark on Lily’s face is proof.”

“Vanessa says Margaret caused it while dragging the child away.”

“That is a lie.”

“Then prove it.”

Police officers entered the hallway.

Vanessa followed them with an ice pack pressed against her wrist.

She pointed at me.

“That woman attacked me because she hates me.”

One officer separated us while another spoke with Daniel.

Vanessa began crying.

She claimed Lily had thrown herself onto the floor during a tantrum.

She claimed I had misunderstood everything.

Then she showed the officers a bruise forming on her wrist.

Lily hid behind Daniel.

Vanessa looked at her.

“Tell them what really happened.”

The warning was clear.

Before Lily could speak, Claire raised her phone.

“The recording disappeared from my gallery, but the livestream didn’t.”

Everyone turned toward her.

Claire had accidentally streamed the video to a private bridesmaids’ group.

Three women had seen it.

One had already saved a copy.

Patricia stopped smiling.

Claire played the recovered video for the officers.

Vanessa lunged for the phone.

A guard held her back.

The officers watched the slap.

Then they watched Vanessa force Lily onto her knees.

One officer turned to Vanessa.

“Put your hands behind your back.”

“This is my wedding!”

“Not anymore.”

Patricia shouted that they would sue all of us.

Vanessa kept her eyes on Daniel as the officer handcuffed her.

“I gave up everything for you.”

Daniel held Lily closer.

“You gave up nothing. You hid what you were.”

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“You still don’t understand.”

She looked at the paper in his hand.

“You already signed more than that.”

Daniel’s face changed.

“What did you do?”

But Vanessa was dragged toward the exit.

Her answer followed us through the crowded hallway.

“Check your house before my mother gets there.”

May you like

Patricia was no longer standing outside the conference room.

She had disappeared.
