Chapter 9
Mason grabbed Daniel as he came through the rear door.
Lily fell from Daniel’s arms.
I caught her before she hit the ground.
“Run!” Daniel shouted.
I carried Lily toward the side yard.
Mason struck Daniel with a metal flashlight.
Daniel fell to one knee.
Two officers rushed from the front of the house, but smoke blocked their view.
Mason pulled a knife.
“Tell me where the trust records are.”
Daniel wiped blood from his eyebrow.
“You will never touch her money.”
“This was never just about money.”
“Then what is it about?”
Mason’s face twisted.
“Your dead wife destroyed our family.”
Emma had reported Mason for stealing from her father’s company years earlier.
His conviction began with evidence she uncovered.
Patricia blamed Emma for that too.
Every grievance in that family had become an excuse for revenge.
Mason moved toward Daniel.
I set Lily behind a stone wall and grabbed the garden hose.
I turned it on full force and sprayed Mason in the face.
He stumbled.
Daniel tackled him.
The knife slid across the wet grass.
An officer reached it first.
Mason was arrested while firefighters contained the garage blaze.
Daniel needed six stitches.
Lily refused to leave his side at the hospital.
By sunrise, the final pieces of the case had fallen into place.
Mason admitted installing spyware on Daniel’s phone and copying his electronic signature.
He had transferred the money.
He had created the forged medical records.
He had also helped Patricia damage Emma’s car.
Vanessa had planned the confrontation.
She wanted Emma frightened into surrendering part of the inheritance.
But when Emma’s brakes failed on the highway, Vanessa refused to call for help because she feared exposure.
All three of them had left Emma to die.
The district attorney charged Patricia and Mason with murder.
Vanessa was charged as an accomplice, along with child abuse, fraud, conspiracy, and theft.
Months passed before the trial.
Lily began therapy.
Some nights she still woke crying.
But slowly, she stopped asking permission to eat.
She stopped hiding bread in her pockets.
Daniel sold the house where Vanessa had hurt her.
They moved closer to me, though I never assumed my place in their lives was guaranteed.
Trust had to be rebuilt.
At trial, Claire’s recording showed the jury who Vanessa was when she believed no one could stop her.
Emma’s letters proved the obsession had lasted for years.
Cole testified about the crash.
Rosa testified about the grease on Vanessa’s hands.
Mason testified against Patricia in exchange for avoiding a life sentence without parole.
Vanessa took the stand and blamed everyone else.
Then the prosecutor played Emma’s final voicemail.
Vanessa’s face remained cold.
The jury noticed.
After two days of deliberation, all three defendants were found guilty on the major charges.
Patricia screamed at Vanessa as deputies separated them.
“You said nobody would ever know!”
Vanessa screamed back.
“You were the one who cut the brakes!”
Their family finally turned on itself.
Outside the courthouse, reporters surrounded Daniel.
He said only one sentence.
“My daughter is safe, and that is all that matters.”
That evening, Lily placed Emma’s recovered necklace around her neck.
Then she looked at Daniel.
“Can we go home now?”
He smiled.
“Yes.”
But when we reached my house, an envelope waited on the porch.
There was no stamp.
