Chapter 6

Daniel refused to go alone.
Detective Ruiz arranged the jail visit and watched from behind the glass.
Vanessa entered wearing an orange uniform.
Without the wedding dress, she looked smaller.
But her eyes were unchanged.
Daniel picked up the phone.
“Did you kill Emma?”
Vanessa smiled faintly.
“No hello?”
“Answer me.”
“She always made everything look easy. The perfect house. The perfect husband. The perfect little girl.”
“You were her sister.”
“Half-sister.”
“That does not answer my question.”
Vanessa leaned closer to the glass.
“I didn’t cut her brake line.”
Daniel’s hand tightened around the phone.
“The report never mentioned a brake line.”
For the first time, Vanessa looked uncertain.
Daniel stood.
She slapped her palm against the glass.
“Sit down!”
He did.
“Why should I?”
“Because Emma was alive after the crash.”
The room seemed to stop.
Daniel stared at her.
“What?”
“She called me.”
“You’re lying.”
“She was trapped. She knew she was dying.”
Daniel’s face twisted with pain.
“Why would she call you?”
“To tell me where she had hidden the original trust documents.”
Vanessa spoke as if she were describing someone else’s life.
“She begged me to call an ambulance.”
“Did you?”
Vanessa looked away.
The silence answered him.
Daniel’s voice broke.
“You let her die.”
“She had everything.”
“She had a child waiting for her!”
“So did my mother. She spent her life watching Emma live on money that should have been ours.”
Daniel pressed his forehead against the glass.
Then Vanessa delivered another blow.
“Patricia cut the brake line. Not me.”
Ruiz entered the room immediately.
Vanessa realized the conversation was being recorded.
She began shouting that Daniel had trapped her.
But she had already said enough.
Police arrested Patricia before sunset.
She denied everything.
Then investigators found an old voicemail from Emma saved in Vanessa’s cloud account.
Emma’s weak voice begged for help.
Vanessa had kept the recording.
Perhaps it made her feel powerful.
Perhaps she believed she would never be caught.
That night, Daniel sat on the floor beside Lily’s bed.
He told her that Vanessa and Patricia would not return.
He did not tell her how her mother had died.
Not yet.
Lily touched his bruised cheek.
“Are you mad at me?”
“No.”
“The wedding stopped because I told.”
“The wedding stopped because Vanessa hurt you.”
“But now you’re sad.”
Daniel pulled her into his arms.
“I’m sad because I should have listened sooner.”
“You didn’t know.”
“I should have.”
She rested her head on his chest.
“Grandma knew.”
I was standing in the doorway.
Daniel looked at me.
“What does she mean?”
Lily pointed toward me.
“Grandma didn’t like Vanessa.”
That was true.
But there was more.
Two months before the wedding, I had seen Vanessa leave Daniel’s office with his safe key.
She claimed she was hiding a wedding gift.
I had believed her because challenging her would have caused another argument with Daniel.
Now my silence felt like betrayal.
“I saw something,” I admitted.
Daniel stood.
“You knew she was stealing from me?”
“No. I suspected something was wrong.”
“And you said nothing?”
“I was afraid you would push me away.”
His eyes filled with anger.
“So you protected your relationship with me instead of protecting Lily.”
The words struck deeper than any slap.
Before I could answer, Detective Ruiz called.
Patricia had confessed to damaging Emma’s car.
But she insisted Vanessa had ordered it.
May you like
And Vanessa insisted the plan had never been murder.
One of them was still lying.
