Chapter 1

My mother-in-law threw my six-week-old baby onto the rug because he wouldn’t stop crying.
One second, Noah was screaming in Diane’s arms.
The next, she snapped.
“Enough!”
She dropped him from chest height.
His tiny body hit the rug with a sickening thud.
For one terrible second, he went silent.
Then he released a weak, broken cry that froze my blood.
I lunged across the living room and scooped him into my arms.
His face was red. His eyes looked unfocused.
My hands shook as I called 911.
“My baby was thrown onto the floor,” I told the operator. “He’s only six weeks old. Please send an ambulance.”
Diane stared at me as if I had insulted her.
“He’s fine,” she snapped. “Stop being dramatic.”
I couldn’t believe her.
She had just hurt my child, yet she sounded annoyed with me.
My husband, Ryan, hurried into the room.
I expected him to take Noah from me.
I expected him to protect his son.
Instead, he put his arm around his mother.
“Mom didn’t mean it,” he said.
I stared at him.
“You saw what she did.”
“She was frustrated.”
“She threw our baby.”
His jaw tightened.
“It was an accident, Emma.”
“No,” I said. “Accidents happen without anger. She lost control.”
Diane stepped toward me.
“Give him here. I’ll calm him down.”
When she reached for Noah, something inside me exploded.
I slapped her hand away, then struck her across the face.
She stumbled backward, screaming.
Ryan grabbed my shoulder.
“What is wrong with you?”
I shoved him away from us.
“You defended the woman who attacked your son.”
“That’s my mother!”
“And this is your baby!”
Sirens wailed in the distance.
Diane’s expression changed immediately.
The anger disappeared.
Fear replaced it.
She grabbed Ryan’s arm.
“Make her cancel the ambulance.”
Ryan moved toward me.
“Emma, think about what you’re doing. Mom could be arrested.”
“That is exactly what I’m thinking about.”
I backed toward the front door with Noah pressed against my chest.
Ryan blocked my path.
“Tell them he slipped from her arms.”
I stared at the man I had married.
He wasn’t worried about Noah.
He was worried about Diane.
“Move.”
“Emma—”
“Move, or I’ll tell the police you tried to stop me from getting medical help.”
His face went pale.
He stepped aside.
I opened the door, forced both of them onto the porch, and locked it behind them.
Diane pounded against the glass.
“You ungrateful little witch!”
Noah whimpered.
I kissed his forehead and whispered, “Mommy has you.”
The police arrived before the ambulance.
Ryan rushed toward the first officer.
“This is a misunderstanding,” he said. “My wife is emotional. She just had a baby.”
Diane began crying.
It was an impressive performance.
She claimed Noah had slipped.
She claimed I had attacked her without warning.
She even held up her reddened cheek as proof.
But Diane had forgotten one thing.
Three months earlier, Ryan had installed a living-room camera after several packages disappeared from our porch.
It recorded everything.
I unlocked the door for the officers and pulled up the footage on my phone.
The room became silent as they watched Diane scream at Noah and throw him.
Ryan’s shoulders collapsed.
Diane stopped crying.
“That video doesn’t show the whole story,” she said.
“It shows enough,” the officer replied.
He placed her in handcuffs.
Then he turned to Ryan.
Ryan had tried to grab my phone while the officer watched the recording.
He had also threatened to delete the footage.
The second officer cuffed him for interfering with the investigation.
Ryan looked at me desperately.
“Emma, please. Protect my mother.”
I took my spare house key from my pocket and handed it to the officer collecting evidence.
“No,” I said. “I’m protecting my son.”
They led Diane and Ryan toward separate police cars.
Diane twisted around and screamed, “You’ll regret this!”
Ryan begged me to change my statement.
I didn’t answer either of them.
The paramedics placed Noah on a stretcher.
I climbed into the ambulance and sat beside him, holding his tiny hand while they checked his breathing.
As the doors closed, my phone vibrated.
A message had arrived from Ryan’s older sister, Claire.
I had not spoken to her in nearly two years.
Her words made my stomach turn cold.

She wrote, “Diane did the same thing to my daughter. Ryan helped her hide it. Don’t trust either of them.”
