Amazed

Chapter 7

Samuel Price lived in a small town near the Canadian border.

Detective Alvarez contacted him before anyone else could.

At first, Samuel denied knowing Diane.

Then police showed him the forged amendment.

He broke down.

Diane had threatened his family fourteen years earlier.

She forced him to notarize the false document and paid him to leave the state.

But Samuel had kept the original trust.

He mailed it to a former law partner with instructions to release it if anything happened to him.

The original document named Claire and Ryan as equal beneficiaries.

Diane was never supposed to control the money.

Most importantly, Noah’s birth did not give her access to anything.

Every withdrawal she had made was theft.

Samuel agreed to testify.

The district attorney froze the remaining accounts.

But nearly two million dollars were still missing.

Ryan insisted there was another accomplice.

He did not know the person’s name.

He only knew Diane called that person “the safe pair of hands.”

At first, I suspected a banker.

Then Maya found something hidden in the guardianship papers Ryan had asked me to sign.

The witness signature belonged to Dr. Paul Harlan.

My obstetrician.

Dr. Harlan had treated me throughout my pregnancy.

He had prescribed medication after delivery.

He had written private notes about my exhaustion and anxiety.

He had access to my medical records and identification.

He could have created false evidence that I was unstable.

When police questioned him, he denied everything.

He claimed Diane was only a patient.

But pharmacy records showed that he had authorized the painkillers found in my bedroom.

Bank records showed monthly payments from Mark’s company to a consulting business owned by Dr. Harlan’s wife.

The safe pair of hands belonged to a doctor.

A man I had trusted with my health.

The district attorney prepared an arrest warrant.

Before officers reached his clinic, Dr. Harlan disappeared.

That same afternoon, the hospital called.

Someone had attempted to alter Noah’s medical chart.

The new entry claimed his concussion could have occurred before Diane arrived at our house.

If accepted, it would create doubt about who had hurt him.

The login belonged to Dr. Harlan.

But hospital cameras showed Diane’s criminal-defense attorney entering the records office shortly before the change.

The conspiracy was spreading.

Maya warned me that Diane’s trial would be vicious.

“She has money, influence, and people willing to lie,” she said.

“Then we keep telling the truth.”

Three weeks later, Ryan was granted one supervised visit with Noah at a secure family center.

I opposed it.

The judge approved it after Ryan’s psychologist testified that the visit could help evaluate his behavior.

Two guards remained outside the room.

A social worker sat beside me.

Ryan entered slowly, his injured arm in a sling.

He did not ask to hold Noah.

He sat across from us and cried.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered.

Noah stared at him without recognition.

Ryan covered his face.

Then the fire alarm sounded.

My heart stopped.

It was exactly what Diane had done at the hospital.

One guard ordered us to remain in place.

The other checked the hallway.

The lights went out.

Emergency lamps flashed red.

Someone screamed near the front entrance.

The social worker moved toward the door.

I pulled Noah against me.

Ryan stood.

“Don’t leave this room.”

A ceiling tile shifted above us.

Dust fell.

Then Dr. Harlan dropped into the room.

He held a syringe in one hand.

Ryan threw himself between us.

Dr. Harlan drove the needle into Ryan’s neck.

Ryan collapsed.

The doctor grabbed Noah’s blanket.

I twisted away and struck him with the diaper bag.

The social worker tackled him from the side.

The guards rushed back and pinned him to the floor.

Inside the syringe was a powerful sedative.

Police later found a van behind the building.

It contained medical equipment, forged travel papers, and an infant car seat.

Diane had planned another kidnapping from inside jail.

Dr. Harlan finally confessed.

He had helped Diane create false medical evidence.

He had also transferred the stolen trust money.

But he offered one final warning.

Diane had paid someone inside the county jail.

“She isn’t planning to escape,” he said.

“She’s planning to silence Ryan before he testifies.”
