Amazed

Chapter 5

Detective Alvarez examined the photograph.

“It was taken before Noah was born,” I said. “Look at the empty bassinet.”

“Who had access to your bedroom?”

“Ryan. Diane. Our housekeeper, Maria. Sometimes Ryan’s cousin Mark.”

Claire’s face changed when I mentioned Mark.

“What?”

“Mark manages Mom’s rental properties,” she said. “He also handles her prescriptions.”

The painkillers had been obtained from a pharmacy owned by Mark’s father-in-law.

Detective Alvarez asked me to send the photograph to his secure email.

Then he traced the number.

It belonged to a prepaid phone purchased with cash.

The store’s security video showed a man in a baseball cap buying it.

His face was hidden.

But Claire recognized the silver watch on his wrist.

She had given it to Mark for his fortieth birthday.

Police searched Mark’s apartment that afternoon.

He was gone.

They found copies of my driver’s license, Noah’s medical records, and several photographs taken through my bedroom window.

They also found documents connected to Diane’s trust.

The papers revealed a larger plan.

Diane had been quietly moving money into accounts controlled by Mark.

Nearly nine hundred thousand dollars had disappeared in three years.

Noah’s birth allowed her to withdraw another five hundred thousand dollars for “family housing and childcare.”

If I lost custody, Ryan and Diane could control every dollar assigned to Noah.

The violence had been terrible.

The motive behind it was even worse.

My son had become a key to a fortune.

That evening, Ryan asked to speak with prosecutors.

He offered information about Diane and Mark in exchange for reduced charges.

Maya warned me not to mistake cooperation for remorse.

“He’s afraid,” she said. “Fear sometimes looks like honesty.”

Ryan claimed Diane had controlled him since childhood.

He admitted deleting the video after Sophie was injured.

He admitted placing the painkillers in my nightstand.

He admitted recording me when I was exhausted because Diane told him the recordings could help him win custody.

Then he said something that made my blood run cold.

“Mark has another camera.”

Detective Alvarez leaned forward.

“Where?”

“In the smoke detector above Noah’s crib.”

Police returned to the house.

Inside the fake detector, they found a wireless camera.

It had recorded Noah day and night.

The camera transmitted to a private server registered overseas.

Mark had watched my baby sleep.

He had watched me feed him.

He had watched every vulnerable moment in our home.

I wanted to tear the walls apart.

Detectives also recovered audio files.

One captured a conversation between Ryan and Diane two days before Noah was hurt.

Diane’s voice was clear.

“If Emma signs the guardianship papers, we control the child’s money. If she refuses, we prove she’s unstable.”

Ryan asked, “What if she leaves me?”

“Then you take the baby.”

“And if the judge gives her custody?”

Diane laughed.

“Judges believe evidence. We’ll create what we need.”

Ryan had known about the plan.

He had not merely protected his mother after she threw Noah.

He had helped prepare the trap.

The next morning, Maya filed the new evidence with the court.

Ryan’s custody request was suspended indefinitely.

Diane faced additional charges for stalking, conspiracy, and attempted kidnapping.

Mark became a wanted fugitive.

For the first time, I thought the danger might be ending.

Then Claire received a call from Sophie’s school.

A man claiming to be Sophie’s uncle had tried to pick her up.

He fled when the receptionist asked for identification.

Claire raced to the school.

Sophie was safe, but a message had been left inside her backpack.

“Tell your mother to stop talking.”

Claire collapsed into a chair.

“This is my fault,” she cried.

“No,” I told her. “This is what they do. They make us blame ourselves for their choices.”

Detective Alvarez placed officers near Sophie’s school and Claire’s home.

He believed Mark was trying to frighten Claire before the criminal trial.

But that night, someone cut the power to her house.

The backup security system activated.

A shadow moved across the backyard.

Claire took Sophie upstairs while I locked myself in the nursery with Noah.

Glass shattered below us.

I called 911 and held a heavy lamp in one hand.

Footsteps climbed the stairs.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

The nursery door handle began to turn.

I raised the lamp.

The door opened.

Ryan stood on the other side.

Blood covered the front of his shirt.

“Don’t scream,” he whispered. “Mark is inside the house.”
