Amazed

Chapter 2

I read Claire’s message three times before the ambulance reached the hospital.

Diane did the same thing to my daughter.

Ryan helped her hide it.

Each sentence felt like another betrayal.

At the emergency room, doctors rushed Noah away for tests.

A nurse guided me into a small room and asked what happened.

I told her everything.

When I finished, she quietly asked, “Do you feel safe going home?”

The question broke me.

Until that night, I had believed my home was safe.

I had chosen the paint in Noah’s nursery.

I had washed his blankets myself.

I had fallen asleep beside Ryan and trusted him with my life.

Now I didn’t know how long he had been lying to me.

“I don’t know,” I whispered.

The nurse squeezed my hand.

“Then we’ll help you make a plan.”

A pediatrician finally entered forty minutes later.

“Noah has a mild concussion,” she said. “We don’t see bleeding in his brain, but we want to observe him overnight.”

My knees nearly gave out.

“Is he going to be okay?”

“We’re hopeful. You acted quickly.”

Relief and rage hit me at the same time.

Noah was alive.

But his own grandmother had injured him.

And his father had tried to protect her.

My phone rang.

Ryan.

I rejected the call.

He called again.

Then a message appeared.

“Mom was released pending charges. Please don’t destroy our family over one mistake.”

One mistake.

I took a screenshot.

Then I sent it to the detective.

Claire called moments later.

Her voice trembled when I answered.

“Is Noah alive?”

“Yes. He has a concussion.”

She released a sob.

“I should’ve warned you.”

“Tell me what happened to your daughter.”

Claire was silent for several seconds.

Then she said, “Three years ago, my daughter Sophie spilled juice on Mom’s white couch. Mom grabbed her by the arm and threw her against a cabinet.”

I covered my mouth.

“Sophie needed six stitches. Ryan was there.”

“What did he do?”

“He convinced me not to call the police. He said Mom would lose her job and the family would blame me.”

“Did you believe him?”

“I was scared. My husband had just left. I needed help with rent, and Mom controlled money our father had left us.”

Claire’s voice hardened.

“Ryan deleted the security footage. Then Mom told the hospital Sophie had fallen.”

The room seemed to tilt.

Ryan had not panicked when he tried to take my phone.

He had done it before.

“Do you have proof?” I asked.

“I have pictures of Sophie’s injury and messages from Ryan asking me to lie. I saved them after I moved away.”

“Why did you contact me now?”

“Because Ryan called me from the police station. He told me to say Mom had never been violent.”

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“What did you say?”

“I told him I was done protecting her.”

Before I could respond, someone knocked on the hospital-room door.

Detective Alvarez entered.

He had watched the footage in my house.

“I need to tell you something,” he said. “Your husband was released, but we obtained an emergency protective order. He and his mother are not allowed near you or Noah.”

I showed him Claire’s message.

His expression changed.

“Can your sister-in-law provide a statement?”

“She says she has evidence.”

“Good. This may establish a pattern.”

My phone vibrated again.

This time, the alert came from my home security system.

Motion detected at the back door.

I opened the live feed.

Ryan stood on the patio with a crowbar.

Diane waited behind him.

Ryan forced the door open.

They entered the house.

“What are they doing?” Detective Alvarez asked.

Then Ryan looked directly at the camera.

He raised the crowbar.

The screen went black.

My chest tightened.

“The original footage,” I whispered. “They’re trying to destroy it.”

The detective immediately called nearby officers.

But another alert appeared on my phone.

The nursery camera had activated.

For several seconds, I saw Diane tearing through Noah’s drawers.

Then she pulled a folder from beneath the changing table.

It contained Noah’s birth certificate, Social Security card, and passport application.

She held them up to Ryan.

“Once we have the baby,” she said, “Emma will never find us.”

The feed suddenly disappeared.

Detective Alvarez heard every word.

He turned toward the door.

“You and Noah are not going home,” he said. “Not tonight. Maybe not for a long time.”

I looked through the glass at my sleeping baby.

May you like

Ryan and Diane were no longer trying to avoid punishment.

They were planning to take my son.
