Chapter 1
Vanessa thought she could destroy a poor nanny’s life for fun.
She waited until Elena carried Lily’s laundry upstairs.
Then she slipped into the small bedroom beside the kitchen where Elena kept her coat and purse.
Vanessa removed a diamond bracelet from her wrist.
It was worth more than Elena earned in a year.
She pushed it deep inside Elena’s bag, stepped into the hallway, and screamed.
“My bracelet is missing!”
Elena rushed downstairs.
Six-year-old Lily followed her.
Daniel came out of his home office, still holding his phone.
“What happened?” he asked.
Vanessa pointed at Elena.
“She stole my diamond bracelet.”
Elena froze.
“No. I would never steal from this family.”
Vanessa grabbed Elena’s purse and emptied it across the marble floor.
Keys, tissues, and a worn leather wallet fell out.
Then the diamond bracelet landed beside Daniel’s shoes.
Vanessa smiled.
“There it is.”
Elena’s face lost all color.
“I don’t know how that got there.”
“You’re a liar,” Vanessa snapped. “I trusted you inside my home.”
“It isn’t your home,” Lily whispered.
Vanessa turned sharply.
“What did you say?”
Lily hid behind Elena.
Daniel didn’t seem to hear her.
He stared at the bracelet as if he couldn’t understand what he was seeing.
Vanessa had been his fiancée for eleven months.
Elena had worked for him for nearly three years.
She had cared for Lily after Daniel’s wife died.
She had stayed through fevers, nightmares, and every terrible morning when Lily woke up crying for a mother who would never come home.
Daniel knew Elena.
But the bracelet was still on the floor.
Vanessa had already called the police.
Two officers arrived minutes later.
“She stole it,” Vanessa told them. “I want her arrested.”
Elena’s eyes filled with tears.
“Mr. Carter, please. You know me.”
Daniel opened his mouth, but Vanessa cut him off.
“Don’t let her manipulate you. People like her always have an excuse.”
One officer reached for his handcuffs.
Lily ran forward.
“Elena didn’t take it!”
Vanessa seized the child’s arm.
“Go upstairs.”
Lily pulled away.
“I saw you put it in her bag.”
Silence filled the room.
Vanessa laughed nervously.
“She’s confused.”
“I’m not confused,” Lily said. “You came out of Elena’s room.”
Vanessa’s expression hardened.
“Young lady, stop lying.”
Lily pointed toward the hallway ceiling.
“The camera saw you.”
Everyone looked up.
A small security camera faced Elena’s doorway.
Vanessa’s smile disappeared.
Daniel hurried to his office and opened the security system.
The video showed Elena carrying laundry upstairs.
Thirty seconds later, Vanessa entered Elena’s room.
She emerged without the bracelet on her wrist.
Daniel replayed the footage.
Then he turned to Vanessa.
“You planted it.”
Vanessa backed away.
“This isn’t what it looks like.”
“You tried to send an innocent woman to jail.”
“She’s turning Lily against me!” Vanessa shouted. “She wants your money. She wants my place in this family.”
Elena shook her head.
“I only wanted to protect Lily.”
Vanessa lunged at her.
Elena caught Vanessa’s wrist and slapped her away.
Vanessa stumbled into a table.
“How dare you touch me!”
“How dare you use a child to support your lie?” Elena replied.
Daniel stepped between them.
“Security!”
Two guards entered from outside.
Vanessa stared at Daniel in disbelief.
“You’re choosing the nanny over your future wife?”
“I’m choosing the truth.”
“You’ll regret this.”
“No,” Daniel said. “I regret letting you near my daughter.”
He ordered security to escort Vanessa outside.
But one of the officers blocked the doorway.
“We’re not finished, ma’am.”
Vanessa looked from the officer to the camera.
For the first time, she appeared afraid.
Then Lily tugged on Elena’s sleeve.
“There’s something else.”
Elena knelt beside her.
“What is it?”
Lily glanced toward Vanessa.
“She came into Daddy’s office last night.”
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
Vanessa stopped struggling.
Lily continued in a trembling voice.
