Chapter 7

“Everybody out!” an officer shouted.
Daniel pinned Vanessa against the floor.
She fought like a trapped animal.
Marcus broke free from the second officer and ran into the tunnel.
Elena untied her mother.
Rosa could barely stand.
Daniel pulled Vanessa up.
“You’re coming with us.”
She smiled through her pain.
“No one is leaving.”
She slammed her hand against a red switch on the wall.
Steel doors dropped over both exits.
The basement shook.
The timer continued counting.
Forty-five seconds.
Vanessa laughed.
“If I lose everything, so do you.”
Daniel grabbed her shoulders.
“How do we open the doors?”
“You don’t.”
Elena searched the wall.
Near the floor was an old emergency release lever.
It had been chained shut.
An officer fired at the chain.
The first shot missed.
The second broke the lock.
Daniel pulled the lever.
One steel door rose several inches, then stopped.
“Move!” he shouted.
The officers pushed Rosa underneath.
Elena crawled after her.
Daniel forced Vanessa toward the opening.
She kicked him and tried to pull away.
“Let me die!”
“You don’t get to escape judgment.”
He shoved her through.
The timer reached fifteen seconds.
Daniel slid beneath the door.
The tactical team ran through the tunnel.
Behind them, Vanessa stopped.
Her wedding dress had caught on a metal bolt.
“Help me!” she screamed.
Elena looked back.
Every instinct told her to keep running.
Vanessa had framed her.
Threatened Lily.
Kidnapped Rosa.
Tried to burn them alive.
Still, Elena ran back.
She tore the fabric and freed Vanessa.
They reached the tunnel exit as the explosion struck.
Fire roared behind them.
The blast threw everyone onto the grass beside the boathouse.
Windows shattered in the lake house.
Flames rose from the roof.
Daniel crawled toward Elena.
“Are you hurt?”
She shook her head.
Rosa was alive.
Vanessa lay on the ground, coughing.
An officer handcuffed her.
She looked at Elena with hatred.
“Why did you save me?”
“Because I’m not like you.”
Police searched the woods for Marcus.
A blood trail led to the lake.
One of Daniel’s boats was missing.
The marine patrol found it drifting two miles away.
There was no sign of Marcus.
Vanessa was taken to the hospital under guard.
Rosa stayed overnight for observation.
The stolen trust documents were recovered from a fireproof case beneath the basement floor.
But the eight hundred thousand dollars was still missing.
Three days later, Daniel brought Lily to visit Rosa.
Lily climbed carefully onto the hospital bed.
“I’m sorry Vanessa hurt you.”
Rosa kissed her forehead.
“You have nothing to be sorry for.”
Elena stood beside the window.
She had barely slept since the explosion.
Every unfamiliar car made her tense.
Every ringing phone made her think Marcus had returned.
Daniel joined her.
“The police believe he may have drowned.”
“Do you?”
“No.”
“Neither do I.”
Daniel handed her an envelope.
She stiffened.
“What is that?”
“A formal apology and compensation.”
Elena did not open it.
“You think money fixes what happened?”
“No. But you lost your home, your safety, and nearly your mother because of someone I brought into your life.”
“That wasn’t your intention.”
“It was still my responsibility.”
Elena looked at him.
“I don’t want compensation. I want the truth about Sofia.”
“We’ll get it.”
His phone rang.
The caller was the detective.
They had recovered Marcus’s laptop from a hidden office.
The computer contained videos of his clients.
One file was labeled SOFIA RUIZ.
At the police station, Elena watched the recording.
Sofia sat in the clinic’s records room.
She was speaking directly to the camera.
“If you are watching this, Marcus found out what I copied.”
She described the false files and secret payments.
Then she revealed something Elena never expected.
“Vanessa is not Marcus’s sister. She is his wife.”
Daniel stared at the screen.
Sofia continued.
“They use false identities to enter wealthy families. Vanessa marries the target. Marcus controls the evidence. Once she gains access to the money, they disappear.”
The detective paused the video.
“We found marriage records from twelve years ago.”
Daniel felt sick.
Vanessa had been planning to rob him from the day they met.
The detective opened another file.
It contained a live tracking signal from the stolen money.

The funds had been moved that morning.
The receiving account belonged to Claire Carter.
