Chapter 9
The detective confirmed it minutes later.
Vanessa had attacked a nurse, stolen her uniform, and left through a service entrance.
Her handcuffs were found in a stairwell.
Daniel immediately called the safe house where Lily and Rosa were staying.
No one answered.
Elena called her mother.
Nothing.
They raced across town with police escorts.
The safe house door was open.
A guard lay unconscious in the hallway.
Rosa was found locked inside a bathroom.
“Elena!”
Elena embraced her.
“Where is Lily?”
Rosa pointed toward the back door.
“Vanessa took her.”
Daniel felt the world disappear beneath him.
A phone rang in the kitchen.
Vanessa had left it on the table.
Daniel answered.
Lily was crying in the background.
“Daddy!”
“Lily, I’m coming.”
Vanessa took the phone.
“You were supposed to marry me today.”
“Don’t hurt her.”
“I gave you everything.”
“You gave me lies.”
“I gave you a chance to have a family.”
“My family is the little girl you kidnapped.”
Vanessa went silent.
Then she said, “Come to the cemetery where your wife is buried.”
The police traced the call.
Vanessa was already moving, but traffic cameras followed the stolen vehicle toward the cemetery.
Daniel and Elena arrived before the tactical team.
Rain fell across the empty grounds.
Lily stood beside her mother’s grave.
Vanessa held a gun behind her.
Her ruined wedding dress was gray with ash and mud.
“Stay back,” she warned.
Daniel raised his hands.
“I’m here.”
Vanessa looked at Elena.
“I told you to come alone.”
“Elena is part of this family,” Daniel said.
The words struck Vanessa harder than a slap.
“She is the nanny.”
“She protected Lily when I failed to.”
“You love her?”
“This isn’t about Elena.”
Vanessa pressed the gun against Lily’s shoulder.
“It has always been about her.”
Lily began to sob.
Vanessa looked down at the grave.
“Your dead wife controlled everything. Her trust. Her rules. Her perfect memory. I could never compete with a ghost.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“You never knew Anna.”
“I knew enough. You still talked to her when you thought no one was listening.”
“She was Lily’s mother.”
“And I was supposed to replace her.”
“No one asked you to replace anyone.”
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.
“For once, choose me.”
Daniel looked at Lily.
His daughter was trembling, but she was watching him carefully.
“Let Lily go, and I’ll stay.”
Elena whispered, “Daniel, no.”
Vanessa smiled.
“Kneel.”
Daniel lowered himself onto the wet ground.
“Now release her.”
Vanessa pushed Lily forward.
Lily ran toward Elena.
For one hopeful second, it seemed Vanessa would surrender.
Then she aimed at Elena.
“You took everything from me.”
Lily screamed.
Daniel lunged from the ground.
The gun fired.
Elena twisted away.
The bullet grazed her shoulder.
Daniel struck Vanessa’s arm.
The weapon fell near the grave.
Vanessa clawed for it.
Lily picked it up first.
Everyone froze.
The gun shook in her small hands.
“Stay away from Elena!” Lily cried.
Vanessa stared at the child.
“Give me that.”
“No.”
Daniel spoke calmly.
“Lily, put it on the ground.”
Vanessa stepped forward.
Lily backed against the grave.
Elena moved between them despite the blood on her shoulder.
“She has already seen what you are,” Elena said. “Stop making it worse.”
Vanessa’s face collapsed.
“I was going to be her mother.”
“A mother protects her child.”
Police vehicles entered the cemetery.
Vanessa looked toward the approaching lights.
Then she reached for Lily.
Elena blocked her.
Lily placed the gun on the ground and ran to Daniel.
Officers surrounded Vanessa.
She did not fight this time.
As they handcuffed her, she looked at Daniel.
“You will miss me.”
“No,” he said. “I’ll remember the warning.”
“What warning?”
“That evil doesn’t always enter through a broken window. Sometimes you invite it inside.”
Vanessa was taken away.
Daniel held Lily beneath the rain.
Elena leaned against him, weak from her injury.
At the hospital, doctors said the bullet had only cut the surface of Elena’s shoulder.
Lily refused to leave her bedside.
Late that night, Daniel sat beside them.
Lily opened her eyes.
“Daddy?”
“Yes?”
“Can Elena stay forever?”
Elena looked away.
Daniel took her hand.
“That decision belongs to Elena.”
Before she could answer, Rachel entered the room holding a sealed letter.
“It was recovered from Marcus’s office,” she said.
“It’s addressed to Elena.”
Elena opened it.
The letter had been written by Sofia.

Daniel Carter’s wife did not die naturally.
