Chapter 5

Fire climbed the boxes.
Smoke filled the storage unit.
Claire grabbed a metal chair and hurled it against the small window.
The glass cracked but did not break.
Vanessa and Marcus fled through the side door.
Elena pulled off her coat and beat at the flames.
“It’s spreading too fast!”
Claire struck the window again.
This time, it shattered.
Cold air rushed inside.
Elena screamed for help.
A police officer outside heard her.
Seconds later, the main door opened.
Firefighters dragged Elena and Claire to safety.
Daniel arrived with Lily’s social worker close behind him.
He had left Lily with Rachel and driven to the storage facility after the police called.
Elena sat inside an ambulance with an oxygen mask over her face.
Claire had a cut on her arm, but she was alive.
Daniel hugged his sister.
“I thought I lost you.”
Claire held him tightly.
“For once, try listening to me.”
He almost laughed, but then he saw the firefighters carrying blackened boxes outside.
“Did you find anything?”
Claire nodded toward a small metal case.
“I pulled that out before the fire reached it.”
Inside the case were flash drives, copies of medical files, and Sofia’s journal.
The final entry had been written hours before her death.
Marcus Reed is selling false medical histories and hiding payments through shell companies. Vanessa finds the clients. Marcus creates the records. If anything happens to me, Elena must know it was not an accident.
Elena read the words twice.
Then she broke down.
Daniel sat beside her.
“Sofia left you the truth.”
“And they killed her for it.”
Detectives searched the drives.
The files contained evidence connected to dozens of crimes.
False injuries.
Invented addictions.
Fabricated psychiatric records.
Custody cases had been decided with Marcus’s lies.
Vanessa had located wealthy families in conflict and sold information to the highest bidder.
Lily was only their newest target.
Police issued warrants for both siblings.
But Vanessa had disappeared.
Marcus’s burned car was found near the river.
There was blood on the driver’s seat.
No body was recovered.
That evening, the social worker returned to Daniel’s house.
“The accusations against you and Elena were based on forged records,” she said. “The restrictions are lifted.”
Lily ran into Elena’s arms.
“I knew you would come back.”
Elena held her, crying.
“I told you I would.”
Daniel watched them and felt ashamed.
Elena had risked her life to protect his daughter.
Yet when Vanessa planted the bracelet, he had hesitated.
“I should have trusted you immediately,” he said.
Elena looked at him.
“You were shocked.”
“That isn’t an excuse.”
“No. It isn’t.”
Her honesty hurt, but he deserved it.
“I will spend the rest of my life making sure Lily never doubts that I believe her.”
Lily looked up.
“And Elena?”
“And Elena,” he said.
A knock came at the door.
Claire checked the security monitor before opening it.
A courier had delivered a package.
There was no return address.
Inside was a white wedding invitation.
Daniel Carter and Vanessa Reed.
The ceremony date was the following morning.
The location was Daniel’s lakeside property.
Across the invitation, Vanessa had written a message.
COME ALONE, OR ELENA’S MOTHER DIES.
Elena grabbed her phone.
She called her mother again and again.
No answer.
Her mother lived in a small house outside the city.
Police were sent there.
They found the front door open.
The living room had been destroyed.
Elena’s mother was gone.
On the kitchen table lay another photograph.
It showed Elena’s mother tied to a chair inside Daniel’s lake house.
A clock beside her displayed the current time.
“She’s alive,” Elena whispered.
Daniel called the police captain.
A tactical team began preparing.
But the lake house sat on twenty wooded acres.
Vanessa knew the property.
She knew every gate, camera, and hidden entrance.
Claire studied the photograph.
“Look at the clock.”
Daniel enlarged it.
Behind the clock was a mirror.
A man’s hand appeared in the reflection.
Marcus wore a silver ring on his smallest finger.
“He’s alive,” Elena said.
Daniel’s phone rang.
Vanessa’s voice came through.
“If I see one police car, Rosa dies.”
“Let her go.”
“Come to the wedding, Daniel.”
“You’re insane.”
“Maybe. But you once promised to love me forever.”
The call ended.
Elena looked at Daniel.
“You’re not going alone.”
“She said—”
“I heard her. That is my mother.”
Daniel glanced toward Lily.
Lily had been listening from the stairs.
May you like
Her face was pale.
“Daddy,” she whispered, “Vanessa knows the tunnel.”
