Amazed

Chapter 11

Caleb Reese died at fourteen.

Officially, drowning.

Family story: tragic accident at the lake.

Elaine had been five.

Daniel had been nine.

Richard had handled everything.

His wife, Marianne, never spoke of Caleb after the funeral.

Elaine remembered only one thing.

“Caleb used to protect Daniel,” she said.

The words felt familiar.

Too familiar.

Nick had protected Thomas.

Caleb had protected Daniel.

And Daniel had grown into the man Caleb had once tried to shield him from.

Ramirez pulled the old report.

Thin.

Too thin.

No autopsy beyond basics.

No witness statements from neighbors.

No investigation into bruises found on Caleb’s arms.

Richard had claimed Caleb was clumsy.

There it was again.

The family language of abuse.

Clumsy.

Emotional.

Careless.

Sensitive.

Words used to hide hands.

Elaine gave a statement.

Then Marianne called me.

Daniel’s mother.

Her voice trembled.

“I heard Elaine came to you.”

“Yes.”

“Is Thomas safe?”

“For now.”

She cried.

“I tried to make Daniel safe too.”

I closed my eyes.

“What happened to Caleb?”

Silence.

Then a sob.

“Richard beat him because he talked back. Caleb ran toward the dock. Richard followed. Daniel saw it.”

My chest tightened.

“Daniel saw his brother die?”

“Yes.”

“And nobody told the truth?”

“Richard said he would blame Daniel.”

Generational fear sat heavy in my hands.

It explained Daniel.

It did not excuse him.

I told Marianne that.

She whispered, “I know.”

The next day, Richard Reese was brought in for questioning.

He laughed at the detective.

Then Ramirez played Elaine’s drive.

Richard stopped laughing.
