Amazed

Chapter 15

The verdict came on a clear morning.

Guilty.

Daniel Reese.

Child abuse.

Assault.

Fraud.

Conspiracy.

Attempted financial theft.

Witness intimidation.

Guilty.

Marissa’s plea stood.

Richard’s trial began two months later and ended with a conviction for manslaughter in Caleb’s death and decades of abuse-related charges.

Marianne testified.

Elaine testified.

Even Daniel testified against his father after his own conviction.

Not redemption.

Evidence.

At Daniel’s sentencing, I spoke.

“I missed signs because I trusted the wrong person,” I said.

My voice shook.

“I will live with that. But my son will not carry my guilt or his father’s violence.”

Daniel cried silently.

I looked at him.

“You were once a scared child. That matters. But Thomas was your child, and you became the danger.”

The judge sentenced Daniel to eighteen years.

Richard to twenty-five.

Marissa to five with restitution.

Protective orders were made permanent.

My business accounts were restored.

The rival restaurant never opened.

The restaurant where everything came out remained mine.

Ours, in a way.

Because my staff had locked doors.

Called police.

Stood up.

And Nick had left proof on table seven.

After sentencing, Thomas asked for spaghetti.

Nick said, “Same.”

We went back to the restaurant.
