Chapter 5

Daniel was released on bail at noon.
By 12:17, he called me.
I did not answer.
By 12:23, he called the restaurant.
My manager, Luis, answered.
Then hung up.
By 12:30, Daniel walked through the front door.
He was not supposed to come near Thomas.
He knew that.
He came anyway.
The lunch crowd went quiet.
Nick was sitting with Thomas in the corner, both boys bent over homework they were pretending to understand.
Daniel smiled at me.
“Valerie, we need to talk.”
“No.”
His smile thinned.
“You’re angry. I get that.”
“Leave.”
He glanced at Nick.
“You let that street kid sit in my restaurant?”
My restaurant.
The words landed.
Luis stepped beside me.
“Our restaurant belongs to Ms. Carter.”
Daniel laughed.
“Her name is Reese.”
“Not for long,” I said.
His eyes flashed.
Then he saw the security camera above the bar.
He lowered his voice.
“You think that recording proves anything? Thomas is confused. He has always been sensitive.”
Thomas heard him.
His pencil snapped.
Nick stood.
So did I.
“Do not speak about my son.”
Daniel looked at Nick.
“You want another lesson?”
The room froze.
He realized too late what he had said.
Luis picked up the phone.
“Police?”
Daniel backed toward the door.
“This is harassment.”
“No,” I said. “This is documentation.”
He left before officers arrived.
But the camera had captured everything.
Elise filed the bond violation by evening.
Daniel was arrested again before dinner.
This time, Marissa posted online.
Powerful local restaurant owner frames husband after marital dispute.
I read the headline three times.
May you like
Then I smiled.
Because Marissa had just stepped into the light.
