Chapter 13

The trial came faster than expected because Daniel took a plea on some charges.
Then withdrew it.
Then tried to blame Marissa.
Then Richard.
Then me.
His lawyers changed twice.
Truth makes poor company for people built from excuses.
Marissa pleaded guilty first.
She admitted helping Daniel build the rival restaurant.
Admitted forging narratives against me.
Admitted knowing Thomas was afraid.
The prosecutor asked, “Did you know Daniel hit his son?”
She looked down.
“I suspected.”
“Why didn’t you report it?”
“I wanted the business.”
At least greed was honest.
Daniel’s trial included abuse, fraud, conspiracy, attempted financial theft, and child endangerment.
Richard’s cold case was separate.
But the judge allowed limited family history to show pattern.
When Thomas testified by video, I sat beside him off camera.
He held my hand under the table.
The prosecutor asked what happened in the garage.
Thomas described Daniel grabbing him.
Threatening me.
Threatening Nick.
Then Nick stepping forward.
His voice broke at that part.
“Nick didn’t even know me.”
The prosecutor asked, “Why was that important?”
Thomas looked down.
“Because my dad knew me and still hurt me.”
I almost broke.
Nick testified next.
He wore a clean shirt Teresa bought him.
His bruise had faded.
His voice had not.

He said, “I recorded because scared kids need proof.”
The courtroom went silent.
