Amazed

Chapter 9

The medical records told the story my son had been too afraid to.

Bruised ribs.

Sprained wrist.

Repeated headaches.

Each one explained by Daniel.

Each one accepted by me.

I sat in the hospital waiting room while Thomas underwent a full exam and hated myself with a precision that felt surgical.

Nick sat beside me.

“You didn’t know.”

“I should have.”

“He made sure you didn’t.”

I looked at him.

A twelve-year-old should not be comforting me.

But there he was.

The boy who had learned survival without ever being taught safety.

“I’m sorry,” I said.

“For what?”

“For needing you to be brave.”

He looked down.

“I was already scared. Brave was just standing in the right place.”

Thomas came out with the doctor.

The doctor’s face said enough.

Old injuries.

Patterns.

Abuse.

Detective Ramirez upgraded the case.

Daniel’s bail was revoked.

Marissa was arrested for conspiracy, fraud, stalking, and evidence fabrication.

Daniel’s attorney withdrew after learning the custody filing had used falsified evidence.

Cowards love distance when consequences arrive.

That evening, Thomas finally told me everything.

Daniel had started hitting him six months earlier.

First a shove.

Then a slap.

Then “accidents.”

Daniel said boys needed discipline.

Daniel said I was too soft.

Daniel said if Thomas told, I would lose the restaurant and Nick would disappear.

Thomas cried so hard he could barely breathe.

I held him and said the only words that mattered.

“I believe you.”

He clung to me.

“You didn’t before.”

The truth landed.

I did not defend myself.

“I know. And I will spend my life making sure you never have to convince me again.”
