Chapter 14
Daniel took the stand against advice.
He wanted the jury to see him as wounded.
A good father under pressure.
A man who snapped.
But the prosecutor had his messages.
His bank transfers.
His custody plan.
His threats.
She asked, “Did your son discover your affair and financial scheme?”
“Yes.”
“Did you hurt him to keep him silent?”
Daniel cried.
“I panicked.”
“Did you strike Nick?”
“He attacked me.”
The prosecutor played Nick’s recording.
Daniel’s voice filled the courtroom.
Move, you little street rat, or you’ll get what he gets.
Nick’s voice followed.
You’ll have to go through me first.
Then the impact.
Then Thomas screaming.
Jurors looked away.
Daniel lowered his head.
The prosecutor asked again.
“Did you strike Nick?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Daniel whispered, “Because he made me feel exposed.”
There it was.
Not panic.
Not pressure.
Exposure.
After court, Thomas asked to see Daniel.
I said, “You do not owe him that.”
“I know.”
“Then why?”
“I want to tell him something.”
We arranged it with therapists and officers present.
Daniel sat behind glass.
Thomas picked up the phone.
“You were hurt when you were little,” he said.
Daniel started crying.
Thomas continued.
“I’m sorry that happened.”
Hope flashed in Daniel’s face.
Thomas finished.
“But you don’t get to give it to me.”
