Amazed

Chapter 1

I came home from overseas with flowers in one hand and my suitcase in the other.

I expected Claire to cry when she saw me.

I expected her hands on her round belly.

I expected to feel our son kick against my palm.

Instead, I found a coffin in my mother’s living room.

White satin.

White roses.

White candles.

And my wife lying inside it.

Claire.

Eight months pregnant.

Wearing the white maternity dress from our video call the night before.

My flowers fell to the floor.

My mother, Evelyn, stood beside the coffin in a black dress, perfect makeup, no tears.

My brother Nathan stood by the bar with whiskey in his hand.

Neither moved toward me.

“What happened to Claire?”

Evelyn answered too softly.

“There were complications. She died during childbirth.”

I stared at her.

“That’s impossible.”

Claire had been smiling last night.

She had shown me the nursery.

The hospital bag.

The blue blanket.

She had laughed when our baby kicked at the sound of my voice.

“She was fine,” I whispered.

Nathan took another drink.

“You were gone. Things changed.”

“Which hospital?”

Silence.

“What doctor?”

No answer.

That was when I noticed.

No relatives.

No priest.

No neighbors.

No one from Claire’s family.

No sympathy cards.

No photographs.

This was not a funeral.

It was a stage.

I stepped closer.

Evelyn grabbed my wrist.

“Don’t look too closely. Remember her peacefully.”

I pulled away.

“Do not touch me.”

Claire’s face was pale.

Her hands rested over her belly.

I touched her cheek.

Cool.

But not cold.

Before construction, I had been an emergency medic.

I knew death.

Claire did not feel dead.

I moved her hair.

A bruise darkened her shoulder.

“What is that?”

“She fell,” Evelyn said quickly.

“Before what ambulance?”

Nathan’s jaw tightened.

“You’re grieving. Stop interrogating us.”

I leaned close.

“Claire. I’m here.”

Then I placed my hand on her stomach.

Something moved.

A kick.

My heart stopped.

I pressed two fingers to her neck.

Nothing.

Then faintly.

A pulse.

“She’s alive.”

Evelyn went pale.

Nathan stopped drinking.

Neither looked relieved.

They looked terrified.

“You knew,” I said.

Evelyn straightened.

“You’re in shock.”

“My wife has a pulse.”

“She was pronounced dead.”

“By whom?”

Silence.

The night before, Claire had told me she found a locked drawer in my father’s office.

Property transfers.

Nathan’s name.

A letter my father wrote before he died.

Then she said, “If something happens before you come home, don’t believe the first story.”

I had laughed.

Now my pregnant wife lay drugged in a coffin.

I called emergency services.

Nathan moved toward the hall.

I stepped in front of him.

“Where are you going?”

“To get help.”

“The ambulance is coming.”

Evelyn’s mask cracked.

“You would destroy this family over that woman?”

I stared at her.

“What did Claire discover?”

She said nothing.

Sirens screamed outside.

Paramedics rushed in with police behind them.

“She’s alive,” one said. “Heavily sedated.”

“And the baby?”

A pause.

“There’s a heartbeat. Weak.”

My knees nearly gave out.

As they lifted Claire out, something fell from her hand.

A tiny brass key.

I knew it.

My father’s private safe.

Evelyn saw it.

For the first time, my mother looked afraid.

Whatever Claire had found was still in this house.

And now I had the key.
