Amazed

Chapter 15

Matthew turned one with cake on his face and joy in his fists.

Claire laughed for the first time without flinching afterward.

That sound healed something in me.

Rose came with a blue sweater she knitted badly.

Matthew loved it because babies have no taste.

I said that.

Rose threw a napkin at me.

Family, I learned, could be rebuilt from strange pieces.

Not all blood.

Not all history.

Choice.

Truth.

Showing up.

My mother appealed.

Lost.

Nathan appealed.

Lost.

Price lost his medical license forever.

Victor’s remains were finally buried under his own name after police finished.

No one asked Evelyn where she wanted him placed.

She had lost the right to arrange the dead.

Claire wrote a letter to my father every month.

She kept them in a box.

I asked why.

“He believed me before I knew I needed it,” she said.

I started writing too.

Dad,

I missed too much. But I am listening now.

The first letter took me an hour.

The second took less.

By the tenth, I could write without crying.

Mostly.

Matthew learned to say “Da” that summer.

Then “Ma.”

Then “key,” because the fund logo was everywhere.

May you like

Claire cried when he said it.

So did I.
