Amazed

Chapter 6

The company collapsed into panic.

Crawford Construction had my name on the letterhead, but Nathan had run operations for years while I handled overseas contracts.

Now every account smelled wrong.

My mother’s signature.

Nathan’s approvals.

Victor’s old shell companies revived under new names.

My father had suspected.

Claire had confirmed.

I had been blind.

My attorney, Nora Vale, met me at the hospital.

She was small, calm, and terrifying.

“Your father left contingency control documents,” she said.

“What does that mean?”

“If Evelyn or Nathan were implicated in fraud, their voting authority transfers to you temporarily.”

“He planned for this?”

“He planned for survival.”

She placed another envelope on Claire’s bedside table.

This one had Claire’s name.

Claire opened it with trembling hands.

Arthur had written:

Claire, if Daniel hesitates because blood confuses him, remind him that family is who protects the innocent.

Claire cried silently.

I read the line three times.

Blood confuses him.

My father knew me too well.

Detective Holt confirmed the sedative came from a doctor named Leonard Price, a private physician my mother used for years.

Price disappeared before police reached his office.

Nathan’s phone showed recent messages.

Mom says use enough to slow her breathing, not stop it.

I had to leave the room.

In the hallway, I punched the wall once.

Then stopped.

Claire and Matthew needed me with unbroken hands.

I pressed my forehead to the wall and whispered, “Dad, I’m sorry.”

Nora found me.

“Apologize later,” she said. “Act now.”

So I did.

I froze company accounts.

Removed Nathan’s access.

Suspended executives tied to him.

And announced an independent audit.

By evening, half the board wanted me gone.

May you like

Good.

That meant I was walking toward the right fire.
