Justice came in courtrooms.
Healing came slower.
Claire hated closed rooms.
I removed every lock inside our apartment except bathrooms.
Even then, we installed safety releases.
Matthew grew round and loud.
His cry no longer frightened us.
It blessed us.
At first, Claire could not look at white flowers.
So I threw out every arrangement sent by polite relatives.
I told them to send diapers or nothing.
Most sent nothing.
Good.
Rose visited once a week.
She and Claire formed a bond I did not understand at first.
Then I realized they had both been used by Evelyn’s silence.
One as a secret.
One as an obstacle.
Rose met Matthew carefully.
She touched his tiny foot and cried.
“He is innocent,” she said.
Claire nodded.
“So are you.”
Rose broke down.
I left the room and let them have that moment.
The company audit exposed more corruption.
I sold divisions tied to Nathan’s schemes.
Paid restitution.
Reported crimes.
Lost contracts.
Gained sleep.
Nora said, “You’re dismantling half your inheritance.”
“No,” I said. “I’m removing infection.”
My father’s honest projects survived.
