Amazed

Chapter 9

Evelyn refused to see Rose.

That answered enough.

Still, Rose testified.

She handed over every record.

Nathan tried to use her existence to claim Evelyn was a victim of my father’s control.

It failed.

Arthur’s letters to Rose were kind.

Careful.

Never possessive.

He wrote:

You owe me nothing. Support is not ownership.

I cried reading that.

My father had raised another man’s son, supported a hidden daughter, protected Claire, and still tried to save the company from rot.

He had been better than all of us deserved.

The trial preparation took months.

Claire came home from the hospital before Matthew did.

Leaving him there shattered her.

Every night, we drove back.

Every morning, we returned.

One night, she woke screaming.

“I was in the coffin.”

I held her while she shook.

“I’m here.”

“She said the baby would be hers if I stopped fighting.”

My blood froze.

“Evelyn said that?”

Claire nodded.

“She wanted Matthew?”

“She said Crawford blood should not be raised by a woman who would expose the family.”

I wanted to burn every portrait in that house.

Instead, I filed for permanent protection orders.

No Evelyn.

No Nathan.

No Price.

No contact with Claire or Matthew.

The judge granted them.

When Matthew finally came home after six weeks, Claire carried him over the threshold of our temporary apartment.

She whispered, “No coffins. No secrets. Only air.”

I kissed both their heads.

Amen.
