Chapter 5

Claire saw our son for the first time through NICU glass.
She was in a wheelchair, pale, shaking, alive.
I pushed her carefully.
The nurse opened the small window.
“He’s strong,” she said.
Claire touched the glass.
“Hi, Matthew.”
I looked at her.
“Matthew?”
She smiled weakly.
“After your father. If that’s okay.”
I cried.
Right there in the NICU.
“Yes.”
My father’s name was Arthur Matthew Crawford.
Evelyn had tried to erase his truth.
Claire had given it breath again.
Detective Holt came later with news.
Evelyn had been arrested.
Attempted murder.
Kidnapping.
Conspiracy.
Fraud.
Evidence tampering.
Nathan had been arrested too.
He refused to speak.
But my father’s journal did.
It named offshore accounts.
Fake companies.
Property transfers.
And a location behind the lake house boathouse.
Police dug that afternoon.
They found human remains.
Victor Hale.
Shot once.
Buried under concrete my father thought was a patio repair.
My mother’s perfect hands had signed checks over a grave.
Claire listened from her hospital bed.
Her face was still.
“She told me family secrets should stay buried.”
I took her hand.
“She meant literally.”
Claire almost laughed.
Then cried.
I cried too.
A social worker asked if we had safe housing.
I almost said yes.
Then stopped.
My house had become a crime scene.
My mother’s house had held a coffin.
The lake house held a body.
“No,” I said. “Not yet.”
The hospital arranged a secure suite.
For the first time since I came home, I slept in a chair beside Claire with our son alive down the hall.

Sleep was not peace.
But it was a beginning.
