Chapter 1

I was eight months pregnant when Ryan decided I had embarrassed his mother for the last time.
All I did was say no.
Diane stood in my kitchen with her hand out, waiting for my bank card like she owned my paycheck, my body, and the baby growing inside me.
“She needs things for the nursery,” Ryan snapped.
“No,” I said. “That money is for the baby.”
Diane’s mouth twisted.
“See how she talks to me?”
Ryan changed instantly.
His eyes went flat.
“Emily, apologize.”
“I’m not apologizing for protecting our child.”
He grabbed my wrist.
Hard.
“Ryan, let go.”
Instead, he dragged me through the back door.
I stumbled, one hand wrapped around my stomach.
“Stop! I’m pregnant!”
Diane followed, calm as a queen.
“She needs to learn who runs this family.”
Ryan pulled me across the yard toward the old dog kennel we had not used in years.
My knees buckled.
“Please.”
He shoved me inside.
I landed on the padded floor, pain shooting through my hip.
The gate slammed.
I grabbed the bars.
“Ryan!”
He looked down at me.
“When you’re ready to apologize to Mom, maybe I’ll let you out.”
Diane smiled.
“That attitude will break.”
Then a voice came from behind them.
“Open that cage.”
Ryan froze.
My heart stopped.
“Dad?”
My father, Michael, stood beside the garden gate with his travel bag still in his hand.
He had driven from Nashville to surprise me before the baby came.
Instead, he had just watched my husband lock his pregnant daughter in a kennel.
Dad’s face was terrifyingly calm.
“Open it. Now.”
Diane stepped forward.
“This is a private family matter.”
Dad looked straight at her.
“My daughter is my family.”
Ryan fumbled with the latch.
Dad helped me out and called 911 before anyone could speak.
Then he saw the papers scattered on the patio table.
“What are those?”
Diane lunged.
“Nothing.”
Dad picked up the top page.
His face changed.
It was a guardianship agreement for my unborn baby.
My name was signed at the bottom.
But I had never seen it before.
I stared at Ryan.
“You forged my signature?”
Dad kept reading.
Then he went pale.
“Emily,” he whispered. “This is worse.”
He turned the last page toward me.
The person listed to receive custody was not Ryan.
It was Diane.

And beside Diane’s name was another signature.
A signature that belonged to the woman I had called Mom my entire life.
