Amazed

Chapter 14

Diane’s trial began first.

She wore gray and pearls.

The pearls enraged me.

Like she thought elegance could soften conspiracy.

The prosecutor played the video from Dad’s phone.

I had not known he recorded after entering the yard.

Ryan unlocking the kennel.

Me shaking.

Diane saying, “This is private.”

Then the papers.

The forged signature.

The custody transfer.

Jurors watched in horror.

Dad testified.

His voice stayed calm until he described seeing me inside the kennel.

Then it broke.

“I have seen cruelty,” he said. “But I had never seen someone put my pregnant daughter in a cage and call it family discipline.”

Mom testified too.

She admitted Diane blackmailed her.

She admitted she signed.

She admitted she failed me.

Diane’s lawyer tried to use the affair to shame her.

Mom lifted her head.

“Yes, I lied. Yes, I was afraid. But Diane used my shame to help steal Emily’s baby. My wrongdoing does not erase hers.”

I cried quietly.

Not forgiveness.

Not yet.

But truth.

Ryan testified against Diane.

He named every plan.

Every message.

Every threat.

Diane stared at him like he was dead to her.

Maybe he was.

When asked why he helped, Ryan whispered, “Because I wanted my mother to choose me.”

The prosecutor said, “Over your wife?”

“Yes.”

“Over the baby?”

May you like

He closed his eyes.

“Yes.”
