Amazed

Chapter 8

Dr. Steven Vale denied everything.

He claimed he had examined me privately.

He claimed I had consented to evaluation.

He claimed my mother misunderstood their conversations.

Then Nora found the clinic logs.

I had never been there.

My signature on the intake form was forged.

The nurse listed as witness had retired two years earlier.

The affidavit was fake.

The guardianship case collapsed before it ever stood.

But the criminal case grew teeth.

Ryan and Diane had conspired with Vale.

Diane wanted the baby.

Ryan wanted my money.

And Vale wanted my mother silent about the affair, because his public reputation rested on being a respected family doctor, donor, and church elder.

The irony was disgusting.

A man who told my mother to erase me had signed papers to erase me from my own child’s life.

When police searched Diane’s house, they found a nursery.

Not a guest room.

A nursery.

A crib.

A rocking chair.

Clothes washed and folded.

A name painted on the wall.

Benjamin Ryan Hale.

Not the name I had chosen.

Not my last name.

Not even my husband’s.

Hale was Diane’s maiden name.

I stared at the photos until my vision blurred.

“She renamed him,” I said.

Dad took the tablet from my hands.

“She doesn’t get to name him.”

I whispered, “His name is Caleb.”

Dad knelt beside my chair.

“Then Caleb is who he will be.”

That night, contractions started.

Too early.

Too sharp.

Dad drove me to the hospital with one hand on the wheel and one hand gripping mine.

I cried, “I’m not ready.”

He said, “You don’t have to be ready alone.”
