Chapter 9

Caleb came three weeks early.
Tiny.
Furious.
Perfect.
The first time I heard him cry, every betrayal in my life went quiet.
A nurse laid him on my chest.
I touched his dark hair with one trembling finger.
“Hi, baby,” I whispered. “I’m your mom.”
Dad stood beside the bed, crying openly.
Mom waited outside.
I had not decided if she could come in.
Ryan was in jail.
Diane was barred by court order.
Vale was under investigation.
For the first time in months, no one in the room wanted my child except to love him.
Later, when Caleb slept, Nora arrived with new paperwork.
My custody protections.
Hospital security restrictions.
Birth certificate forms.
I wrote his name slowly.
Caleb Thomas Bennett.
Thomas after my father’s father.
Bennett after me.
Not Ryan.
The nurse asked if I wanted the father listed.
I looked at Caleb.
“No.”
That one word felt like a door locking.
Mom came in the next morning.
I allowed five minutes.
She stood by the door, hands clasped.
“He’s beautiful,” she whispered.
“Yes.”
“I’m so sorry.”
I looked at her.
“Sorry does not make you safe.”
She flinched.
“I know.”
“If you want to know Caleb, you will cooperate with police. Fully. No more secrets.”
She nodded.
“I already gave them everything.”
Dad looked at her sharply.
“What everything?”
Mom’s face crumpled.
“Diane recorded me admitting Steven was Emily’s father. But Steven recorded Diane too.”
Nora leaned forward.
“What did he record?”
Mom swallowed.
May you like
“Diane saying Ryan wasn’t Caleb’s father.”
My whole body went cold.
