Chapter 3

At the hospital, they strapped monitors around my belly.
The baby’s heartbeat filled the room.
Fast.
Steady.
Alive.
I cried as soon as I heard it.
Dad stood beside my bed, one hand over his mouth.
The nurse asked questions gently.
Had Ryan ever hurt me before?
Had Diane threatened me?
Had I signed any custody or guardianship documents?
“No,” I said again and again.
No.
No.
No.
But every no opened another memory.
Diane insisting I was too emotional.
Ryan hiding mail.
My mother asking strange questions about whether I felt “ready” for motherhood.
I called Mom from the hospital bed.
She answered on the second ring.
“Emily?”
My voice shook.
“Did you sign papers with Diane?”
Silence.
That silence told me more than words.
“Mom.”
She exhaled.
“Honey, don’t get upset.”
I closed my eyes.
“I’m in the hospital because Ryan locked me in a kennel.”
Dad stepped closer.
Mom whispered, “What?”
“Answer me. Did you sign?”
“I thought it was temporary.”
The room tilted.
“You thought giving Diane custody of my baby was temporary?”
“She said you were overwhelmed. Ryan said you weren’t sleeping. Diane said the baby needed stability if something happened.”
“If what happened?”
Mom started crying.
“I didn’t know he would hurt you.”
Dad took the phone from my hand.
“Carol,” he said, voice low. “You signed away our grandchild behind our daughter’s back.”
“She said Emily might leave Ryan.”
“And you helped them stop her.”
“No. I thought I was protecting the baby.”
Dad looked at me.
His face was broken.
“You protected everyone except your daughter.”
He hung up.
I turned away and sobbed.
Not loudly.
Not dramatically.
The kind of crying that makes no sound because the betrayal is too deep for noise.
The doctor came in later.
The baby was safe.
I needed observation overnight.
Dad sat beside me until dawn.
“I should have seen it,” he said.
“No.”
“I brought you into that family.”
“I married Ryan.”
“And Carol signed.”
I looked at him.
“Why would Mom side with Diane?”
May you like
Dad’s eyes darkened.
“I’m going to find out.”
